And between a 8ch ddr4 and 4ch ddr5, I’m not sure the ddr5 is always better (ddr4 should beat on bw but not latency which depends on the base freq of RAM).
As soon as you introduce AMD TR in an intel cultivated company, people adopte AMD for their others project/collegue. It is remarkable. So why shot its foot like that AMD? They should have put in place an “advantage” program for targeting pro user who eat RAM. There’s a market there.
It significantly increases the price if you want a large amount of RAM though and doesn’t allow you to double the RAM later by just getting another quad channel kit.
Sure, you could say that someone who buys this platform can probably afford it (which would most likely be true), but I still think that these quality of life features aren’t too much to ask for at this price. But maybe that’s just me mourning the time when HEDT was actually a viable option for enthusiasts.
I don’t know how relevant the memory ranks with ddr5 are anymore, but this is mostly a question of capacity then.
And with the current configs you can still get close to 200Gb without paying all too much. Plus, those are the first boards. I don’t think there is anything technically in the chipset itself preventing them from going with more slots, so we will probably see them.
I think it’s because they want to offer 1 mobo for TRX and WRX sockets, so economic reasons.
This is idiotic: people wanting a TRX mobo, will have a bit more expensive mobo, and some (many?) people/entreprise will go epyc/intel because those can’t even have more RAM than the 5995wx.
I’ll be upgrading from 128go to 512 on a 5995wx for my thesis. 128go came from an intel from 2013. In France, there is no epyc genoa workstation tower, they came from america and have restricted warranty to there. The future will be underperforming and expensive intel… If they don’t fix that shit, or, we will have to resort to lenovo and dell and pay extra to avoid a downgrade.
When you buy a machine that cost 500 000 or more, 10 000- 30 000 $ to treat data shouldn’t be a problem (and it’s not regarding the amount they spent on 12c intel).
…So basically, as a prosumer you don’t even get 8 RAM slots anymore on HEDT? Kind of a joke.
That’s 192GB today (512GB in the future, 128GB modules are part of the DDR5 spec), not exactly a small amount.

WRX90 is the successor to WRX80…
TRX40 only had 4 channels, TRX50 only has 4 channels. Nothing changed.
Obviously, speaking as 5995wx user, I don’t consider/compare TRX socket.
Mobo changed : wrx90 will have the same mobo as trx50.
WRX80 is 8 module. WRX90 is 4.

DDR5 has 265GB RDIMM’s, and if you need more the PRO Boards have 8 RDIMM’s.
