So I need some advice (and some ammunition to convince the wife) as I am struck with indecision.
I picked up a 4090 about a week ago (hello starfield) but the rest of my system is a potato by today’s standards (getting ~40fps on starfield max settings) and I would like some advice on an appropriate upgrade path so that I don’t get bottlenecked by my CPU.
Current system:
Motherboard -- MSI PERFORMANCE GAMING X370 GAMING PLUS
(only has pcie 3)
CPU -- 1st gen Ryzen 1700
RAM -- 64GB (4x16) DDR4 3000 CAS 16 (16-18-18-38)
Now my debate is between an AM4 upgrade (5800x vs. 5800x3d) with an upgrade in ~2 years for CPU + RAM + MB. Or do I bite the bullet and upgrade to AM5 (B650?) with new DDR5 ram (??timings) and a 7800x3d. It kind of pains me that 5800x3d and 7800x3d are ~100CAD difference which is why I tossed in the 5800x into the equation.
The goal is 4k 120Hz.
Thanks in advance!
