Harry Potter was a smash hit about a boy discovering he’s a wizard and going to school in a magical world full of wonder and adventure. Twilight didn’t hit quite that high a note, but the story of a teenage girl who learns her classmate is a vampire and falls in love with him did quite well. The Hunger Games popularized the dystopian genre with a bow wielding teenager stepping up to survive death games, have angsty romances, and fight the power.

As far as I can tell, nothing has quite hit that same kind of high since and it may be awhile until the next truly big wave. But if it were up to you, what would the next big thing be about?

Modern genres set in old historical settings. Zombie apocalypse set in ancient Egypt. Detective story set in the Roman empire. Romcom that just so happens to take place in precolonial Africa. A team of aztec teenagers team up to save the world from an alien invasion in 1450! I have gathered a small collection of these over the years and I treasure them deeply, but I wish historical-like fiction that isn’t just about a certain real world historical event was far more popular.

Oh my god a Roman sherlock holmes with just a touch of magic (because that mythos is too good to not use) would be so much fun to read.

First mystery could be solving a whodunnit, the killer could be a dr jekyl mr hyde spin, but make it Romulus and Remus. As one he’s just a mild mannered, low level aristocrat. As the other he’s a brutal gladiator with a love for carnage.
