    Full disclosure: not a teenager, haven’t been for 25 years.

    I used to be an outspoken Android fan. My favorite thing about Android was being able to skin the launcher to make a truly unique-looking interface. I switched to iPhone about 6 or 7 years ago because I needed hearing devices that use an app that isn’t available on Android. That’s literally the only reason.

    Since that time, I now I have an Apple One Family account which includes a good amount of cloud storage, Apple TV, Arcade, yadda yadda yadda. It all works without issue across all devices. The coolest benefit of having this was this last Summer when my wife and I lived apart for about 4 months, we were able to watch Ted Lasso and Foundation and some other stuff together.

    I now use Logic Pro X recording software, which is exclusive to Apple. Its available on Mac or, more recently, on iPad. I use it independently on both. You can also use your iPad as a remote mixer/controller connected to Logic running on the Mac—this is an AWESOME feature that I now wouldn’t want to live without.

    Outside of Logic, you can also use your iPad as a wireless second screen for your Mac. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it works without having to do anything. At the end of the day, it’s another value-add to the greater ecosystem.

    Headphones: AirPods 3. Watch: Apple Watch 7.

    Basically what I’m saying is my entire work and personal ecosystems are Apple-based, so it doesn’t even make sense for me to even consider a non-Apple phone.

    And that’s really what it comes down to: a difference in vision. I don’t really drink the Apple kool-aid, but I do believe they have a comprehensive vision of how all hardware and all software interact with each other. They are a specifically a hardware and software company.

    Google, on the other hand, is an ADVERTISING company. Everything product Google makes—and let’s be clear, it’s ALL software—is designed to serve you ads. They have no interest in any kind of cross-device compatibility beyond how it might serve you ads better/faster.

    I don’t foresee going back to Android unless Apple does something really egregious to somehow betray my trust or confidence.

      All of Android’s “pros” besides having more budget options have essentially evaporated now that Samsung and Google have been trying to vertically integrate their product lines just like Apple.

        If sideloading comes to apple for canada and not exclusively the EU, then I will have no reason to stay on android anymore

        They are too expensive now.

        I can get a new pro iPhone every 2 years for $300. Getting a new flagship Android would cost me $700, because of shitty resale and worse deals.

        Are androids better? Probably. Do I care? No.

      You’re absolutely right, they have a comprehensive vision and it’s long-term. The marriage of thoughtful software and clean hardware is Apple’s secret sauce and they’ve been perfecting it since the 80’s. Google throws everything at the wall to see what sticks, which is admirable in some ways but almost always leaves users in the lurch when they move on to something else.

        Quite literally in the case of the ridiculously incompetent shit they did in Louisville when they tried to microtrench Google Fiber there, it failed, and then they bailed and left the taxpayers to cover the mess. Fuck Google.

      The Apple eco system is great, but fans have to stop pretending like they were into Android. It’s the tech equivalent of “I’m not racist, I have Black friends, but…”

      I have both Apple and Android (Samsung) eco systems as a dev to test software on, and I personally use Apple. What you list for features is basically things Apple took from Samsung (and yes, the reverse happens a lot as well), but in a more limited form.

      The fact that Google continuously kills their chat apps every N years is a great example of this.

      I just don’t tie myself to one eco. It’s not that hard to make things work at least for me.

      Pixel because magic eraser and top shot and unblur cause kids and animals.

      Roku and Shield TV. Apple TV app works on both. And I can run ad free YT on my phone and Shield. Watch together I suppose would have been locked to my iPad or SOs MBA which could either airplay or dock into the TV HDMI.

      iPad for big screen work. Signal on my phone whoch makes working between the devices easy. Plus Bitwarden.

      Sony 1000xm3 earbuds and xm4 headphones cause it has the best noise cancelling (could go airport for headphones - thinking on it).

      All the devices work well together thanks to technology that makes things “open”.

      I do miss apple music because of hey Sonos compat but Spotify is better.

      Watch is gamin because I don’t need a phone on my wrist and hey Google/Sonos/echo work well at home or to my phone.

      Doable but I get you and have thought about it. But the closedness of it bugs me.

      It’s not just about serving the ads. The data you generate by using their devices and carrying them around with you is valuable to them. They present value to advertisers by being able to effectively target ads to very specific demographics. To that end, it behooves them to make a cohesive ecosystem which makes people more likely to use more devices more often.

      Started on Android except for my Apple Powerbook back in early 2000s. Switched to iPhone because I wanted to try the Apple Watch, haven’t looked back.

       

      But now with Apple fucking people over with their constant upselling, I am half-seriously considering leaving the Apply ecosystem. It’s going to be painful, but might actually be worth it.

      People love to shit on Apple, but they do work flow and integration between other devices in the ecosystem really really well.

      I would need a bunch of random half assed apps to get anywhere near what I can do between my iPhone, Mac, AirPods, watch, and Apple TV (which is hands down the BEST streaming box you can buy)

      The whole ad I currently see about the “best take” feature for swapping faces on a photo irk me on a level I can’t comprehend

      Photography at its core is somewhat capturing a moment in time, not artificially changing that capture

      Obviously photoshop/post production is an important aspect of photography but that’s more or less playing with light and colour, not fundamentally changing what was captured in the first place

      (Maybe being a bit elitest but idk it just bothers me)

      What? It’s apple that’s lacking compatibility. Even SMB is gimped. You got enclosed in an apple garden and you like it, ok, but your assessment is completely backwards.

      I do hate ads, but I think they’re easier to get rid of on Android ironically? Between Firefox and revanced YouTube I’m good for now anyway.

      Google does design hardware including a phone and the CPU for the phone.

      Hit the nail on the head, used to be a android fanatic but I bought an iPhone X and never looked back, apple is full of shit more often than not but they make solid products and I’ve never had an issue with any of the ones I own, other than the price lol

      I do use both but the exact opposite.

      We all use Gmail, gcal, tasks, gdrive, keep, etc.

      We have nest products everywhere. We have Google pucks everywhere.

      I use a Samsung and there’s key software they offer that no other phone manuf. offers.

      There’s a lot more flexibility in using software and files without being specifically tied down to Apple, so it makes easier for cross compatibility against Windows, Mac, Android and iOS

      I’m sure we could argue the merits of each ecosystem but the differences are minimal these days

        My dirty secret is that I prefer G-Suite software to most parallel options that Apple makes. But again, because Google is an Advertising company, they’re more than happy to make those ads available to everyone irrespective of platform. I can use Notes and Keep; iCloud and Drive. I’m not missing out.

        What’s the unique Samsung software you mentioned?

      That’s cool and all. But I really dislike apple for the vendor lock in. it would be much better for their customers if they COULD choose to integrate a non apple device into this.
