I’m sure some are already aware of this, but please do not assume that all Indian families are like TJ’s. Wiping a pan with a cloth that was previously used for wiping cow dung is considered filthy, disgusting, and unhygienic by all Hindus I know including my own family. Don’t get me wrong, there are some families in specific castes who may do this because they’re still living in the fourth century, but the majority definitely, definitely don’t. One of my old coworkers would always make fun of India and asked me if I drink cow urine. I was so offended by this and furious with him for asking me such a disrespectful question, but after watching this episode and the awful way they represent India, I realized he asked because he must’ve been watching something similar. Seriously, please don’t assume that all or even any Indians commit practices like this 🤦‍♀️

Thank you for the synopsis. I think in any culture what the family does. The cow manure in the cloth is disgusting and unsanitary TJ do not tell Kimberly this on purpose because she would never married him and probably would go back with her family. Personally, I don’t care how much I love a man I would never put up with that family or their customs.

I haven’t seen this episode yet. Cow poop smells dreadful. They were using it in kitchen? Wtf? How unsanitary. Did they disinfect or leave the poop there? If a man told me or I was shown cleaning with poop, I would be outta there asap!

Thank you! I knew it wasn’t normal.

I hate that they showed this! It really seems like Matt Sharp productions is determined to show certain countries in a terrible light, especially South Africa and India

Oh oh question!!! I saw the wedding and was wondering; is the wedding that TJ and Kimberly had typical? Was it more of a lower, middle, or upper class wedding?

Yes, the wedding was actually accurate. There are some castes that have beautiful weddings like theirs that last for literal days and nights. Meanwhile there are other castes who have weddings that only last five minutes. Although class can certainly affect how extravagant the wedding is, the rituals and length of the wedding is definitely more of a caste thing than a class thing.

I feel like a lot of India gets lost in the mix. It’s one of the cradles of civilization…Americans have a really terrible habit of using our own ruler to measure what “normal” looks like. Admittedly, the cow dung/urine thing is was not my thing but I also eat KFC so I can’t say anything.

The problem here “could” be his and his family, but my money is on production. Once you sign on the dotted line, you all but give up your soul. The only way to fight it is for everyone to shut the crap show off.

Truth be told, anyone who would take this as reality is really not an intelligent person.

I think most of us assumed this was just this family being whacko, and not a normal thing.

Kimberly gets on my nerves but her reaction was perfect….she just got quiet and her eyes got big and she yelled “TJ!!!” I died.

She is so awful that I find this all funny now. Generally, wiping the kitchen with a poop rag would make me sick, but it was worth it just to watch her freak out. Pretty sure that’s the only thing she’s freaked out about that was justified.

I am an Indian and I think TJ’s family is the absolute worst. They are conservative and rude. I hated TJ from the moment he confessed that he hasn’t been honest with Kimberley regarding her “duties and responsibilities”. Unfortunately, such families(and such men) treat women with utter disregard. If a woman stands up for herself she is either silenced or labelled as problematic. This is patriarchy at its finest.

Where I work in NC has a large community of very conservative Indian people. Now, we have several female installers (including myself), and the Indian men will not allow us to hang their garage doors. They won’t even speak to us. They call the office and demand men come and do the job. It’s hard not to be resentful.

This is a marriage that won’t last. What’s strange is the women are referred to as head of household. If I was head of household I’d say “Im not getting up at 4am to make your ass tea and I’m not cleaning with poop.”

Well, even if this is true. I still see plenty of street food videos with people not wearing gloves, cross contamination with other foods, preparing food on the ground with no shoes, etc….

It would seem the food preparation hygiene is very different from what is acceptable is america.

I get tired of people assuming all Americans are fat. But a lot are, so I can’t really argue that it’s not true. This is how I view your statement.

It is not equivalent. Assuming that what TJ’s family is doing is common amongst Indians is the same as assuming that most Americans don’t have indoor bathrooms since Rob does not. That is an apt comparison of how truly unusual and weird TJ’s family is.

Comparing it to the obesity epidemic in the US is an apples to oranges comparison, particularly since your mention of viral street food videos indicates that you actually have not been to India, meaning you are not really qualified to make a comparison.

This is frankly a very ignorant comment.

First of all, I am an American as well, as I was born and raised in the US. My family’s from India. There’s a very key difference between the two and I would highly encourage you educate yourself before posting clueless assumptions.

Second, Idk how you can even possibly connect cow dung and cow urine to street food habits of not wearing gloves, etc. There have even been local restaurants in the US that haven’t worn gloves on a few occasions. I further can’t say any of the nonsense you did when street hygiene habits have absolutely nothing to do with a typical household’s habits. Just watch the show Kitchen Nightmares where Gordon points out how some of our own American restaurants handle food. Would it be fair to assume all US households including your own handle their dinner preparation in the same manner? Also many Americans have the notorious habit of not washing their rear after doing business in the bathroom. Should I assume that you do the same? That’s how you sound.

I guarantee that my kitchen as well as the kitchens of all of my friends (Indian, American, Canadian, Bulgarian, etc.) have far cleaner cooking habits than you. Using the habits of random people on the street to label an entire country’s cooking habits is laughable, to say the least

I was just wondering where he got the bottle full of cow pee from? Did he hold it under a cow himself or buy it? Where do people store their cow urine and poop usually? Not in the fridge surely. I had never heard of any of this before.

TJs family lost me when they said his father sleeps on the parlor floor after an argument, and now everyone else sleeps in 1 room because they love each other so much? That tells me the family is dysfunctional in some way. I still feel like instead of cow poo or with it, they should have used some of Kim’s sage or incense. I understand traditions go back a long way but it’s also fine to modernize/adjust - the intent to purify is still there so I think the gods would be OK with it.

I have to wonder if this is all for the camera’s.

Its a lot more entertaining for westerners to see those funny backwards foreigners using cow poop then them being just usual day to day people.

Now that the fights are over they need something to keep them entertaining.

I would also say that this show attracts the lowest common denominator in any culture—are all American men and women like Gino, Big Ed, or Angela? Do American homes not have indoor bathrooms like Rob?

No offense but any successful middle to upper class Indian man would NOT want an American woman like Jenny, Jen, or Kim, so it unsurprising that these Indian men are trash. Much like you cannot expect someone like Gino to attract the cream of the crop either.

All those things could easily be attributed to the culture, and might be by a foreign audience viewing the same show.
