Mine are: a coworking space, library, cafe, and a hospital (food allergy). If those aren’t close to where I’m staying, I won’t consider going there.

I’ve created a small tool (completely free, not self promotion) that only shows me hostels with my must-haves at most half a mile away.

As an example, here’s all the hostels in Germany vs just the ones that meet my requirements:

All the hostels in Germany

Filtered down to the best/most ideal hostels for me

This is what an actual city (Dresden here) looks like; yellow=cafe, blue=coworking, black=hostel, brown=library, red=hospital

It’s an interesting way to quickly get an idea of where I could go next. I’d like to improve this tool and make it useful for others as well though, hence this post.

So, what are your “must-haves” when evaluating where to go as a DN? I’m sure I’ve missed some obvious deal-breakers and would love your input.

(If you want to try it out for yourself, here’s the link: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1Dwo)

Hate co working spaces. I work from home and then go to cafes for breakfast/lunch to get out and work a couple hours there.

    Gym Supermarket Beach

Couldn’t think of anything worse than staying in hostels while working.

As a fellow nomad, I feel you on needing the basics nearby. For me, reliable wifi and access to nature (hiking trails, parks, etc) are essentials. It’s awesome you built a tool to filter locations - super helpful for trip planning!

    • Good public transportation system or affordable and easily accessible transportation Uber/taxi etc.
    • not a high crime rate

These are my main considerations when choosing a place

    Others include

    • language
    • government
    • weather

And I figure the rest out when I arrive

    Must haves:
    Food, shelter, clothing.

    Preferred haves:
Freedom and a means to transact freely to be able acquire the must-haves.

Security and freedom for women and LGBT, good enough internet.

I can work from my bed if necessary, I juts won’t stay as many weeks if working isn’t comfortable.

    completely free, not self promotion

For the future: The first doesn’t imply the second. In some countries, if I donate to you based on your “free” work, if it’s in the same line of work you do for your main job (e.g. developer) it still counts as income.

But still, tools like these are very useful and I thank you for sharing your efforts!

Hostels and coworking spaces are at the bottom of my must haves. They are non-existent tbh.

Nice one! Going to have a play with it.

And I disagree with that other poster, if you’re offering a helpful tool for free… That’s not self-promotion, it’s a gift.

    Thank you.
