Honestly most of the people who are banned are for silly reasons. At best, they can extend it to a few months but a site wide ip ban forever? Isn’t that a stretch?
I’ll tell you why I got banned - I have two accounts and I got banned from one subreddit for making a meta comment. I switched to my other account and commented unknowingly that it’s not allowed. My comment didn’t include any abuse, being mean, bullying or harassment. Next, a satire post was made on a sub and I gave a satirical reply (again no abuse etc) and it even receive 800+ up votes but guess what? I’m banned for identity related hate? It was a temp ban and I waited for it to get over. What I didn’t realize was that sub 1 banned me permanently in this duration and I happened to comment there - again a harmless comment like “xyz walked out” and lo and behold i have a permanent ban now.
I feel the mods on reddit are on a power trip and are really going to be the reason for its doom.
Yeah, this unfortunately. Some Reddit moderators are too hostile, I believe people Change for the better and some people do deserve second chances, I tried to apologize to a Reddit mod for unintentionally for breaking a subreddit’s rules. That same Reddit mod accused me for being a tribalist and doing tribalism. I am not a tribalist and I don’t support tribalism
as lemmy grows the hostility here is growing.
I’ve been using this site for almost two years now. In the past two months I’ve gotten more insults, threats, and bans than I have ever had in the past two years. Mostly because reddit exteremists who are getting banned are bringing their ban-happy harassment agendas to lemmy. Also a big influx of trolls and bot accounts recently.
But hey, at least it’s not AI doing the banning here yet.
Yeah, this unfortunately. But at least lemmy and the fediverse has features that can mitigate extremism. Also lemmy and the fediverse has instances and features that can help regular users and chill people hold power trippers and extremists accountable

I got site banned last year for making ‘racist comments’ because I supported the Asian mayor of my city. Apparently appreciating having a non-white major makes me racist in the eyes of reddit.
I literally got banned for the same reason for LIFE. And my original ban was for a misunderstanding. I even spoke to the moderators and they said they are lifting my ban. So when I commented in ‘marriage’ with another account I assumed it wasn’t banned from there anymore. So I got done for ‘ban evasion’ and then all of a sudden they banned all my accounts and I think my IP address. It was insane! I had 18K karma which I earned over 3 years. Every single time I have appealed they have denied me. Seriously go screw them!

I got a site-wide permaban almost 2 years ago for a joke in r/losercity that was taken the wrong way and I got dogpiled by virtue-signalling furries. I’ve appealed my ban almost 10 times now and they reject it every time.
I don’t get it. They could have just given me a ban from the r/losercity subreddit instead. They didn’t need to ban me from the entire site. I haven’t caused any problems on other subs. I had over 30,000 karma on my account and it took me years to build it all up. I got along great with people in r/vtubers and r/votv and had a lot of fun there.
It’s so bizarre that one f-up gets a sudden permaban from the entire site. All I can think of is that one of the left-wingers in losercity is in with the admins and they called in a favor. It has to be a nepotism thing.

making off kilter comments on reddit for well over a decade… and i never even got a subreddit ban for them…
then around '21/'22 i started getting subreddit bans like crazy. weird. mods kept saying i was a sexist/racist trump supporter… but I am not.
then in '24 it was sitewide bans for mainsteam comments that were ‘violent and racist’. one comment was about my cat killing rabbits in my local city subreddit. The second was ‘racist’ for saying how much I admired our asian majoy in my local city subreddit.
been on lemmy two years now. Had a great time mostly. But recently… now on lemmy every few days I get harassed by some weirdo going around on my old comments for days/weeks ago telling me how racist and sexist trump supporter i am. I assume bot/troll accounts. got a couple fo community bans too for these weirdos reporting me.
agree too that most of the harassment comes from crazy left-wing nutjobs who think nobody is left enough for them, who are 100% fascists, as long as it’s left wing fascism.

I was permabanned for a metaphorical post. Two weeks short of 15 years. Oh well, I found Lemmy and haven’t skiped a beat and it’s WAAAAY nicer here. Like Reddit was before 2010. Fun, friendly and laid back.

I was banned for breaking an unwritten rule. Using slur words in any context is racism or homophobia.

When? Reddit behaves this way because it can afford to. A thousand trolls here, a handful of influencers there, Reddit wouldn’t notice if they’re gone.
Idk I’ve noticed a lot of people complain that they got banned for silly reasons. Mine was silly too. Plus a site wide ban? That’s ridiculous! Reddit going mainstream is its biggest curse. I’ve legit seen comments with death wish, threats and none of those are banned.
