I’m considering moving to Italy from the United States for grad school. I’m just curious how often someone tends to visit their home country for someone in a similar situation

When I studied in the US for my bachelor (about 4.5 years) I went home to Norway once. Tbh I didn’t miss it much either so factors in hah

Any reason why you didn’t miss Norway? I’m living in NO now and I’ve enjoyed it quite a lot (besides still feeling misplaced since I’m yet learning the language)

I haven’t visited my home country for 2 years as I don’t really miss my home country. Plus I don’t like a long haul flight.

I haven’t come back since I left 6 years ago. First I was sorting out my papers and didn’t really feel like it, then there was Covid and after that was over we had a baby. Hopefully next year we will be able to go as I’m already starting to idealize my country. But I guess when you become a parent things change massively as in you start to long for your “tribe” and kind of look back to your roots. Not that I want to move back, it’s just the perception of your native country changes with time and change of status. At least that’s been the case for me.

I moved away 4.5 years ago, I’ve been home once (mostly due to Covid) ideally I’d like to visit once a year. Realistically probably will visit once every other year.

I’ve lived abroad for 6 years and have been home twice. When I was in grad school here I didn’t go home at all during the program.

Once or twice a year for 2-3 weeks at a time. I would maybe go more often if I could afford first class. I really hate flying

Few weeks ago was the first time I went home in 12 years. Despite the desire to go home more often, it is the cost of flights that is the main issue. Making the next trip happen in 2 years time

similar situation as in … being a student ? depends what ties you have to your home-home, how affordable are the flights (unless they are offered to you) …

while paying for my own travels, I started with 4 times a year, now I had not been for 2 years almost, and its only a 2h flight. but my kids father still goes 4-6 times a year, as he gets involved in some local art projects …

Twice a year at least (Christmas and summer), but that is because there are direct flights and it is like 2.5h away costing around 200€

Been away from Canada for just over five years now. Maybe next summer we’ll go back for a short visit to visit family. Maybe not.
