If you’re anything like me, you probably read a lot of books and forget a lot about them as well after reading them (also see: being ADHD)

Is there one specific book whose plot, characters, setting you just can’t get out of your mind and still think about today even when in the midst of another book?

For me, it’s 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I think due to the sheer volume of this book (clocked in over 1000 pages) I was so invested in Tengo and Aomame’s stories that it’s quite impossible to forget them quickly. This is also why I prefer long novels, because they stick around in my memory for longer!

So what book is still stuck with you?

I saw the Opera The Diving Bell and the Butterfly earlier this year. Took heavy inspiration from that book. Now I want to read it.

Count of Monte Cristo really disturbed me. Grapes of Wrath disturbed me too. The difference between the two, not that people may often think of them against each other; but for some reason I do…

I saw the suffering and revenge in The Count and totally ruining every life, every character suffered. Needlessly suffered.

In GoW the Characters suffered due to the economy, the dust bowl, factors out of their control. All the characters suffered (well not the bankers or sheriffs, maybe). And the Joads, who were bewildered, angry, and losing their family, one by one, could not refuse anyone who was needy. They offered kindness, comforting, shared their bread, gave rides, fixed cars…

I won’t forget either of these books.

I periodically pick up The Grapes of Wrath. Originally read it in 1968 and loved it and still love it. I live in California and know the terrain and history so it is especially moving for me.
