Hey everyone! I’m on a mission to find the ideal black watch for my boyfriend’s upcoming birthday, and I could really use your expertise and opinions. After some scouting, I’ve narrowed down my options to two Seiko watches that caught my eye:

  1. https://www.seikowatches.com/au-en/products/discovermore/ssb415
  2. https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/5sports/srpd65

I’m not a watch expert, and neither is my boyfriend, but he likes them. I’m aiming for a watch that not only looks good but might also liked by those in the know. So, which one do you think would make a better gift?

If you have any other black watch suggestions, feel free to drop them in the comments. I’m open to exploring more options, thanks in advance for your help!

I would also recommend the Tissot Gentleman (automatic) if it is within your budget.

I presume this will be your partner’s first “serious” watch, so something he can dress up or down definitely is desired (something that the Tissot Gentleman can do esp. on a black leather strap).

If you want to stick to Seikoland the Presage series is also worth checking, albeit more expensive than the Seiko 5 sports.

It depends on what you are looking for. If you are getting quartz watch (first Seiko, it needs batteries) you shouldn’t go wrong with any. You won’t have to maintain as automatic (second Seiko, it works without battery powering up by wearing it, it has mechanism inside and doesn’t require electricity). Mechanical watches ofc will be tended to from time to time. If you want to get your bf into watches - het him automatic mechanical as your second choice:).

Well, I just want a nice watch with a black metal bracelet :D I haven’t really thought about the type of watch or maintenance, thanks for pointing that out!

I would go with the SRPD65. This is based on your request for watches that watch enthusiasts will care more about even though 99.9% of people are not watch enthusiasts. You would be more than fine with either of these though.

-For people in the know, automatic movements get more respect than quartz. It shouldn’t matter, but he will get a little more street cred.

-The “SKX style” is pretty famous among watch people. It’s also just easier to read.

-Depending on how big his wrist is the other watch might be a little too big, but I have a pretty strong preference for smaller watches so that could just be my bias talking.

Don’t buy straight from Seiko, use jomashop, creationwatches, or Amazon or eBay. All will be significantly cheaper then buying direct.

SSC813 Solar Quartz. Looks good on the stock bracelet or leather or rubber. Better finishing than a Seiko 5. No maintenance for 15-20 years. Convenient. Accurate. None of the cheap Seiko mechanical watch BS like losing or gaining half a minute a day.
