So basically it’s the same. 🤦🏻♂️ more storage that really isn’t lacking. More processing that also isn’t lacking and probably the same price which is a big weakness. They should do a version of the old Wii Nintendo used to make. Put an accelerometer in the remote or maybe even allow you to use the phone as a controller. You could have 4K tennis experience in front of your appleTV and if they tied it to apple fitness with the watch it would be a real competitive offering that keeps people engaged in the ecosystem and provides new value. Come on Tim Cook think differently for once!
I just bought a Shield Pro, so it’s guaranteed that the next Apple TV will do Atmos passthrough.
If the 2024 ATV implements the three things below, they will takeover the stream box market:
- Support for Dolby True HD and DTS MA Audio Codecs
- Ability to host Plex server locally
- Upgrade DAC processing to support 48/192
You would think Apple would be pushing av1 to reduce its bandwidth spend for Apple TV+, but a17pro seems like an absurdly expensive chip to use for an Apple TV?
I’ve always been surprised at how often Apple iterates this product and changes nothing of substance.
They released the $400 iPad mini 6th gen on the same day, and with the same chipets, as their $1000 iPhone 13 Pro. If they’re serious about selling “console-quality” games they should get to it on the thing that people already have connected to their TV.
I mean it just seems sort of insane to use 3nm silicon companies like Nvidia are desperate to sell GPUs costing tens of thousands with margins of well over 500% on… selling a smart TV box? Saving a few dimes on bandwidth for the minority of users that are Apple TV+ subscribers? Helping push games which most Apple TV users don’t play?
I wouldn’t be shocked if the last gen chip can just brute force av1 decode in software too. It just seems hilariously uneconomical.
changes nothing of substance.
Do tell what big missing features you think there are.
In other words don’t upgrade if you have the current one. I’m glad they are introducing a cheaper version though. Apple TV shouldn’t really cost as much as it does. It’s still my favorite streamer and has been from day one and still think it’s the best out there.
Chuck an M chip in it and make it a console
Grand theft auto 5/6 on Apple TV would be great
“Similar design” is not a change, MacRumours
Never have I read so many words and received so little information.
Still have first 4k.
will there be any new features?
That’ll be firmware related
I just want side loading. Wonder if the new EU rules will apply to ATV?
I really would like a travel form. Also wish the HDMI spec had 5V output to eliminate the need for USB power for the sticks on the market.
Since everyone else is sharing anecdotes: my 4k broke after 4 or 5 years. I still bought a new 4k because you can’t beat the damn thing in terms of streaming boxes. It is by a wide margin, the GOAT.
Same here. Just stopped working one day, no lights, no video output, nothing. Tried replacing the power supply which did nothing so now it’s nothing more than a paper weight.
But to your point, when it worked it was so much better than any other alternative.
A yearly refresh of a product shouldn’t be marketed like a new product.
Didnt they just update the Apple TV 4K a couple years ago? Maybe it was just the controller though…
Honestly It performs perfectly fine. Not sure why it needs a refresh yet.
