I’ve lived in my apartment for 2 years and have had no issues with any complaints until a new downstairs neighbor moved in a month ago who claims they can here bass coming from my apartment. I’m not throwing any crazy parties or have it at a high volume. I have a speaker on a table that’s sitting on hardwood that I use to listen to music on throughout the day.

I was wondering if anyone knew how I could reduce the sound from it traveling through the floor? Would a rug underneath the table be helpful? What would you recommend?

    apartment liver with hifi here:

    • Always work with your neighbors to solve the issue. Even if it isn’t an issue to you, having an enemy downstairs will never benefit you. Being proactive (like you are doing) is the answer. Great job.
    • You have to isolate your speakers. In many cities, there are rules/laws around how much of the apartment must be covered in rugs/carpeted. I would think about that when looking at your home. Rugs make a GIGANTIC difference in what downstairs neighbors hear, simply in walking around. So with something that’s designed to make noise (a speaker) you need to be even more cognizant.
    • Isolation, isolation, isolation. Think about it not as a “one and done” situation, but as a place you can increase incrementally. Try an area rug. Then try different isolation between the speakers and the furniture. Then try both together. Think about it like getting ready to go outside in the winter: layers.
