Rumors are that Wenger’s offsides rule will go into effect in the next year. The rule is basically that the offsides line will now be dependent on the last body part being in line with a defender rather than the first body part being past the defender. I personally think this will result in teams parking the bus so that they limit the speed aspect of the forwards. It will be so much more difficult to pull and offsides trap with this rule set. I also think VAR will butcher this for the next few seasons.

So anyways, what rule would you implement or remove if you had the options to? I have two:

Throws-ins: don’t require one foot to be on the ground or the ball to go cleanly behind the head. Two hands on the ball and throw it in, however. you want, that’s it. Granny style? Go for it.

PK’s: Have the players line up ten yards behind the 18 and once the whistle is blown they can go after the ball. This would illuminate the weird runs up to the ball or the final jump kick, which is almost a cheat code against goalies. I’m a united fan so this would of course impact Bruno but I think think it makes sense. The attacker still has the advantage being that it’s a PK but also adds a bit of extra pressure. Shootouts would be so much more involved.

What rule changes can you think of?

Penalty goal rather than a red card for professional foul/stopping a goal scoring opportunity. Fouling player gets a yellow.

Would give advantage to the attacking side and not ruin the rest of the game for spectators.

It still annoys me that Suarez got his side to the world cup by cheating.

My first one would be off the pitch. I would ban the PL rule where they dont allow people to criticise the ref.

Stopping the clock when a ball goes out of play rather than the stupid amount of added on time, and when the ball goes out play after the 90 game’s over

Allow VAR to call down to on-field Referree to issue straight red cards for players making OBVIOUS attempts to decieve the referree (dives for penalties, Neymarring to indicate excruciating pain in order to win free kick then play at 100% right after like nothing happened. General fakery etc. )

And I agree 100% with Wengers offside rule change.

Something more rugby-like when a player other than the keeper intentionally saves a goal with his hands (like Suarez vs Ghana). In rugby if you commit a foul to prevent a try, a try is awarded.

Not sure if you’d class it as a rule.

But reduce the number of teams to 18. Players play far too many games.

Either weirdly defensive nonstop, scores look like NFL scores do, or very boring 1-0 games at most with that offsides rule. Also ya, VAR will become very weird

    1. no offensive players in the 6 yard box on free kicks or corner kicks
    2. 60 minute games where the clock only runs when the ball is in play.

Stop the clock when the ball is not in play. Yellow card sin bins for 5 minutes with 3 being the amount to be sent off but actually giving out cards for yellow card offenses instead of giving them 3 or 4 chances because they don’t want to send players off. Both teams being allowed four throw-in throwers stationed around the field on each side, so all 11 players stay on the pitch. Penalty shootouts should be manager against manager, the players already had 120 minutes to do it themselves.

Eliminate transfers for fees and make teams trade players for players. If you want Brentfords star striker you have to offer 3 players they want in exchange. It would stop wealthy clubs from hoarding all the talent and create more parity in the premier league. I get it would require all of global football to sign up to this and it’s impossible to achieve but it’s my answer for what would improve the game.
