Oppenheimer is now available to purchase in the Apple TV app. With previous Blu-ray releases, Nolan expands the aspect ratio for the imax scenes so it’s not letterbox. But hasn’t done the same for digital purchases (previously).
Has anyone purchased the movie with Apple TV and seen whether the aspect ratio switches? Or is it letterbox the whole way through? I can’t see any mention on the store page.
Gotta buy it on disc to get the shifting ratios as well as the best possible quality, Although I will say from what I’ve read it seems Apple 4k is definitely the best streaming solution if that’s your jam
No, it’s letterboxed the whole way through. IMAX is always exclusive to physical media with Nolan
I thought the Dark Knight had it? Anyways I wasn’t aware that Nolan was also in charge of the distribution. 🙃
He personally oversees all of his films’ home media releases. None of his movies are IMAX on digital. Only Blu-Ray and 4K!
No IMAX on digital
No IMAX on digital? No Oppenheimer! Besides the end was spoiler(ed) back in junior high. 😅
How’s the picture and sound?
I preordered the movie and watched it on release on Apple TV, and I really liked it. Probably wouldn’t be able to tell much of a difference, I felt like it still came close to an Atmos-sound experience with my SONOS-setup, albeit not being available in Dolby Atmos on iTunes.
I watched it last night off the 4k disc and the Sonos app said the sound was 5.1 as well
It kinda sucks digital don’t have imax scenes. I mean I can watch it on a blue ray since ps5 play Blu-ray but I’m concern about the audio, I watch my movies with AirPods I don’t have good speakers. I just hope my AirPods Max can connect through my monitor with a cable jack.
I “hear” you, I listen to my PS5 on headphones, too so I don’t wake everyone up at night. There are Bluetooth adapters for the PS5 if you’d rather stay wireless.
Apple TV 4k in Dolby Vision and Atmos has to be a better experience than HDR10 and DTS, even if the disk has a higher data rate. It’s unfortunate that just because it’s physical media it gets special treatment, when the digital release will have deeper blacks, brighter highlights and more immersive audio. Oh well, who am I kidding, I’ll probably buy both eventually.
