From what I typically see on the sub most of them could be answered with a very simple Google search and a little bit of effort yet 80% of the sub is these types of posts. Almost all of those 80% are people that already know that their watch is fake, or that they could do a little bit of research and find out for themselves. Not trying to be unfriendly or unwelcoming of new people to the watch world but I feel like the sub should be more about appreciating watches and less about enabling people to be lazy.
Mod here!
We’ve been recently having some discussions about the seeming increase in quantity of “identify my fake” posts.
We are looking into some tweaks to automoderator, but most likely this spring we will have it as a large ballot item on our State of the Subreddit meta post where you the community annually get to guide our policies.
They annoy me, but not as much as the “does this fit my wrist?” posts.
By now, a majority of users here, I imagine. Between the ‘is this fake’ and ‘identify this’ posts, the subreddit has really gone to shit. Some days when you browse new, it’s ALL posts of these two types.
Frankly, I’ve visited here less and less because of it. Those topics tend to be posted by people with no actual interest in watches, or the wrong kind of interest entirely. If you look at their profiles, you’ll see that it’s also usually the first time they post here.
We don’t need those topics or those users. There’s a good reason why other forums outright ban these posts: they add nothing and drive away people who actually want to talk about watches.
Agree. These dilute the good photos and neat vintage finds I joined this sub for.
Nah I like it. Often see something interesting. It beats people showing off the same omega speedmaster every week.
Sometimes I learn things from the ID posts. The “is this fake” posts need to go, though!
No. Keep them coming. The funniest posts.
I don’t know. I’ve tried posting several times and somehow always fail at gratifying the bot and get my post deleted. Sometimes I think this may be happening to them.
If the mods were more active they could make a thread for these things. I enjoy seeing people getting a new watch, having actual questions about a watch or try to get a diverse opinion on their collection. I love it when I see a post where people get their first Swiss watch or their first luxury what ever… but then I scroll further and I see the most obvious, obnoxious piece of shit I’ve ever seen. I’m not even sure what these people try to accomplish but to ruin the day of others.
This would eliminate 40% of activity 😂
Let’s not put too many restrictions on what folks post. If if it’s about watches, let it in.
Idk, I got a kick out of the guy who asked to identify the watch Jeffrey Epstein was wearing lol
I mean you also get to see something cool from now and then from people who had no idea.
Also someone who has no experience about watches can google a whole bunch of things and still get scammed, so to me it makes sense to ask here.
Many of us can learn from every post. I dont know it all yet.
Some people have no idea where to start and asking a bunch of people who are obsessed with a topic for their expertise is basically what Reddit is for. If the entire sub was just a circle jerk around photos of pretty watches I think it would get stale pretty fast and heavily discourage new members from interacting at all.
