Hiya, Im Nat, im 18 and im a british student
As my title says im really interested in immigrating to the USA, ideally the mid west like around minnesota. Im just somewhat confused about how exactly I would go through the process of gaining a visa and a green card
I finish my A Levels this year, and I dont plan on going to university. Im just having trouble with what visa to apply for, and how to do it. im struggling to find much online like who i should contact, and how i can do it myself.
I will be working in retail during my gap year to save for everything, im just confused about what i should be doing in the meantime
Thank you for reading!!!
Your options are find a job that will transfer you, or marry an American citizen.
Getting a visa without a university degree is more difficult. You should also think very carefully about what your job prospects would be in the US, given the impact of health insurance, vacation time, and how much you can earn. You won’t be able to get a work visa for retail, hospitality, beauty etc.
Your best option with no degree is to try for a green card via the diversity lottery. Entry has closed for this year (it’s in October-early November each year), entrants will find out if they’re able to interview and get a green card next May-ish, for entry to the US in 2025. So even assuming you enter next year and are successful first time around, you’re coming into the US in 2026 at the earliest. Some people are successful first time, some people miss out 10 years in a row or are never successful.
UK is excluded from the diversity lottery
Really? I thought they had just started to be included.
No I just checked again to be sure. UK is definitely not eligible
Yeah fair enough. I was sure I’d heard it’d changed in the last year or two.
Migration to USA ( or to UK or to many other countries) can be quite difficult, in many cases almost impossible.
Here are some options that can be available for you :
Marriage to American.
Being sponsored by a close family member.
Winning Green Cards through Diversity program lottery
Studying in USA college and getting visa sponsoring job. Or getting visa sponsoring job without going to US college.
That is why you hire an immigration attorney vs. come to Reddit for advice.
worth saying as well. i have friends in the USA who are willing to sponsor me for an immigrant visa if thats an option. ive been offered financial support and accomodation by them, if that helps
Look into US ski resorts. They somehow manage to import a lot of young people from overseas to work.
Yes, there is a special short term work visa. Disney and many other tourist hot spots use these extensively to hire seasonal help.
University (the thing that you don’t want to do, is the thing that you should do)! I suggest that you don’t try to go there at all until you’re a bit older and more mature. Stay in the UK and get more work experience, and eventually you will come up with a more realistic plan on going to America
Marry someone or study in the USA. University is super expensive though. Don’t take out lots of loans though I’d only do this if your family is loaded. We are at the beginning of an AI revolution, no one has any idea what job market will look like in 4-5 years.
