So I finished, fourth wing last night and I’m totally disappointed, it’s the worst book I’ve read this year and one of the worst I’ve read in recent times, I read so many positive reviews about it that I expected a totally incredible story, nothing in the book works, the writing almost amateur( Wattapp says Hello!) character without personality, repetitive plot( I got sick of reading Violeta saying so much: I’m smaller and Brittle than everyone else) the feeling I had was that Rebecca Yarros intended to write a YA, but then because she wanted to write adult scenes (laughable by the way) changed the age of the characters to over twenty, without changing anything in the plot, all their attitudes and everything they do is as if they were 15 year old teenagers, nothing is original, the academy part sounds like a bad copy of Sabaa Tahir’s The Ember in the Ashes (it’s actually a great example of a well-written fantasy series), the dragons are a duller version of How to Train Your Dragon, the romance part is so childish and shameful, and the plot twist at the end was obvious from the beginning I know that most people loved the book and I respect that, but I would like to know if anyone else has a similar opinion.
I enjoyed Fourth Wing. I had a lot of fun reading it despite its flaws. I was hoping the second book would flesh out the characters and the world a more. But Iron Flame was one of the most disappointing books I’ve read in years. I really had to push myself to even finish it. That’s the end of that series for me.
oh no, so it’s not just me? i enjoyed FW but IF is a SLOG so far.
It is SUCH a slog isn’t it- I’ve had to speed it up on audible just to get through it
I personally liked the second book better.
I primarily read fantasy so read this book to have a common book to discuss between my wife and some other friends that primarily read romance.
The first 15-20 chapters of Iron Flame are a bit slow but it really picks up imo.
I’m reading Iron Flame now and struggling! Usually I can read a book in a day or two and this is going on nearly a week because I keep getting annoyed at how bratty Violet is acting in part one and putting it down.
Thanks. I’m struggling through it now. I keep putting it down with no desire to pick it up again.
I legit believe the rumor that Iron Flame was at least partially AI-generated.
I keep arguing against this because I work with AI and it tends to focus on a formal language model and wouldn’t spit out that many grammatical errors. It’s very much human written when you consider where AI is in terms of delivering realistic work.
I also have several prompts prepped for writing out technical analysis and have tried some for fantasy and fictional stories it just doesn’t work yet.
It was supposed to be two books and her editor said “it’s one” like how do you read the first manuscript of it and decide that when it’s clear the story is split into parts. They could have spent time fleshing out the second story and then built out the other one for book 3. Instead she has to info dump in the last 100 pages, which was weird because it messes up the pacing.
Yeah, I read a lot of books per year, and I enjoyed Fourth Wing. I really didn’t have any major issues with it, whereas I DNFed a good portion of the other Goodreads Choice nominations this year.
I was excited to read Iron Flame and was first in line for the audiobook at the library, but I couldn’t finish it before it had to be returned.
Every character talks in the same voice, including the dragons. Everyone is such a trope. Proud, defiant, courageous, earnest. Everyone.
Also they’re all shit at good relationships and I got annoyed.
