My wife is Dominican, and I am an American citizen. My daughter is now 1 year old, and was born in the DR and has not yet traveled to the USA. We went through the CRBA process, and got her CRBA and American passport.

My wife now has a residency visa and we are going to be leaving the DR together with my daughter to go to the US. I have heard a few people here claim that my daughter not only needs an American passport, but also a Dominican passport to be able to leave the country. But I can’t imagine why the American passport wouldn’t be enough.

We have her Dominican birth certificate, CRBA, and American passport. Is that enough to get back to the US? Or do we need to get her Dominican passport? Just wanted to see if anyone knew about this. Thanks!

Firstly, I’m not familiar with visa requirements in DR.

She won’t need a DR passport, but she may need a valid exit visa/stamp in her US passport.

This is the case in Cambodia when exiting for the first time on a foreign passport. We had to do this for my son (dual AU, KH citizen) when we flew out for a holiday when he was 3m with his new Australian passport. Had we had his Cambodian passport at the time, he could have travelled on that and the exit visa would not have been required.

No idea what the requirements are with the Dominican Republic.

One thing to check though - does your child need a stamp on the passport in order to leave? Some countries require that. You can’t leave unless your passport shows proof of legal entry.

Usually it’s pretty quick and easy with a newborn, but something to check.

But otherwise, you should be able to leave with just a US passport.
