I played Baldur’s Gate (the original version) many many years ago (on windows at the time) and I’m a bit on a “revival” mood, so I was thinking about buying the enhanced editions.

I haven’t bought or even played similar games in a very long time (and never on linux), but according to isthereanydeal.com there seems to be many online stores selling it (apparently often at very bargain prices). Are all these stores trustworthy? Will all of them have a BG version that works on linux? or some may only work on windows?

What about gamers-outlet store (they’re not included in the comparator linked above)? They have it even cheaper, is it legit? It also says it’s a “steam key”, does that mean I need to use steam to be able to use that key?

Sorry if these are very beginner’s questions, but I have been out of the games scene for quite a long time and although I’m very experienced with linux (25+ years using linux daily - mainly Debian) the only games I’ve played on linux were native linux games (like Supertuxkart) or some really old DOS games on freedos emulator.

If it’s a Steam key it should just work as Steam will just download the native Linux version. YMMV with others.

      Thanks!

It was a long time I had the original Baldur’s Gate, those CDs are long gone. Anyway I’d like to try the new enhanced version with better graphics and some other add-on’s.

ProtonDB says BG I and II enhanced are both native.

So does Steam. The bare minimum of Linux OS is Ubuntu 18.04 or equivalent, so your all good.

Native work fine, although if you are thinking of modding you may want to use the windows versions anyway due to Native being more picky about the case of file names.

Fanatical seems to have a nice deal currently on the game(s) I want, so I might go with them.

Yup that seems even cheaper, but it says it’s a steam key, while fanatical doesn’t say anything about being a key or not…

This steam keys thing is still a bit confusing to me…

Many online game retailers will sell games keys for different gaming outlets while some will sell keys for multiple outlets. For example, GAMiVO.com may sell Steam keys for a specific game you may want while Humble Bumble may sell both Steam and GOG keys for the same game you may want.

If the games has a linux version steam will automatically download that version unless or until you go into the properties and specify a proton version for use which will automatically trigger an update that downloads the windows version

The places I buy games are the same places I bought them for windows: Steam, GoG, itch.io, and Humble Bundle. If you’re looking for cheap steam keys, also check out Fanatical. If you want to have a launcher for non-steam games, check out Lutris, Bottles, or Heroic Games Launcher.

Go to https://gg.deals/ and disable shady keyshops (a.k.a. key resellers, the absolute worst, avoid like the plague) if you want the trustworthy ones.

It’s just an aggregator, awesome to find low prices without relying on shitty key resellers.

AFAIK every store listed on isthereanydeal is a legit reseller of Steam keys, not even grey market (like G2A, CDKeys etc.).

Just check that each store page says it’s for Steam and it should be fine. I’ve personally used Fanatical, Humble, Greenman and GamesPlanet with no issues.

Thanks. Fanatical seems to be the one with the best deal currently, so I’ll probably go with that one. Thanks.
