Pickett has regressed rapidly over the past month, culminating with one of the poorer throwing performances you will see last Sunday at Cleveland, with some passes as many as 15 or 20 yards off target.
That is when enough became enough.
Time will tell that, but time might have already done its damage. Pickett is a broken quarterback who has regressed significantly in his second year.
Consider this:
• Over Pickett’s past seven games, he has just 1,033 yards passing (147.6 yards per game), two touchdowns and one interception. • Pickett has six touchdown passes all season. Cowboys cornerback Daron Bland has four pick sixes. • There have been 315 quarterbacks that have 500 pass attempts since the 1970 merger. Pickett ranks last with a 1.9 percent TD rate, according to CBS. • Pickett is averaging 6.1 yards per attempt and 10.1 yards per completion. • He has thrown only 22 passes at least 20 yards down the field. • Against the Browns, he did not total 100 yards until his final throw.
Whether it was all Canada’s fault or not, we shall soon see, but 23 games into a first-round quarterback’s career is a lifetime to many. By then, you usually know who the great ones are like Patrick Mahomes and Roethlisberger, and you know who Jake Lockers and Brandon Weedens are, as well.
I just don’t see any tools Pickett has that’ll make him a viable starter. His mechanics are sloppy and his arm isn’t nearly strong enough to make up for that.
Daron Bland now has five pick6’s
My line of thinking: I have/had more faith in Kenny with a new OC than Canada with a new QB. That doesn’t mean my faith in Kenny is very high.
Whether we like it or not, Kenny probably gets the rest of this year and at least half of next.
Steelers aren’t in a position to draft a ready made replacement so may as well see if they can turn Pickett around
Going after Baker would be nice.
[Brock Purdy has entered the chat]
You can draft a decent QB at any round.
Once a generation you can. Trying to thread the Brady - Purdy continuum leads to a lot of bad QBs.
Unlikely, Kenny has only gotten worse. But if you have to choose between Kenny and Canada you to take Kenny 100% of the time IMO. I just hope the questions about Kenny are answered one way or the other by season’s end and they can proceed with that info rather than being left in limbo.
They told us that small hands didn’t matter.
Small arm is the more significant issue TBH
His hand size is fine. His inability to progress through his reads or see the field well is not.
People keep saying Pickett has regressed. He wasn’t really blowing the doors of last year. He made certain plays at specific times that allowed Pittsburgh to win games, same as he’s done this year.
he has just 1,033 yards passing (147.6 yards per game)
Funny how it sounds so much worse on a per-game basis.
Isn’t it the case that neither are good enough? Three were concerns about Canada before Pickett was starting, and the Lee were concerns about Pickett coming outing college and he was probably overdrafted.
Kenny Pickett has succeeded in too many “clutch” situations for me to think he’s a total failure. The play calling has been very un-friendly.
You can’t salvage what never was
no he sucks
Kenny hasn’t played well this year but in his defense he’s faced the hardest slate of defenses of any Qb in the league. Browns twice, ravens, niners, and jags are all top 10 defenses by dvoa
Pickett has as many touchdowns as interceptions in his career 13. Imagine being the full time starter for an NFL team since week 5 of last year (minus injuries) and not even having an equal number of TDs as games you have started.
I don’t think all the blame can be on Canada.
