I think I’m lucky. Any country we move to we have a built in community. So while we may fit in less overall (I hope not) we have people we can immediately be friends with. Anyone have thoughts? Are there any other groups that can feel the same way?
Artists.
Metalheads.
Really?
I’m a bit hesitant to like, go to a community or something. Feels like people who might go there really follow the lifestyle and not just like the music?..
Marxists
That no joke is seriously true. And as a fellow traveller I’ll fit right in.
Apple users
I guess, serious apple users would do it.
Any other cult.
when I see people from my country, I ran away lol. No thank you, if I wanted to hangout with them I would have stayed with my country. But I understand moving somewhere new and immediately feel welcome
Lot of great ideas. I hope we can keep this going. So many people try so hard, learn the language, and still don’t make friends. If we expand this list maybe people will be able to identify soul mates other than fellow ex pats with whom they have no real culture in common. My favorite is Lutheran Bachelor farmers.
Palestinians
That sounds good too, I don’t know much about the Palestinian Diaspora.
The Mormon Church is somewhat similar
Anyone from a collectivist culture/country
so not the USA for sure
I feel this as a gay person. Oddly enough I probably feel it just as strongly as a swimmer! Whenever I move to a new town I join the local masters swim club first and foremost.
My parents said that their Unitarian church was a good way to find like-minded people in different places. My aunt, whose dental practice was predominantly gay men said, “It’s like being gay - they can find each other anywhere.” /grin
We really can. We have to!
Same! Fellow gay here, and soccer instead of swimming. I’ve found that soccer has connected me with SO many people all over the world. No language needed to kick around the ball and have fun and make friends. It’s such a beautiful unifier.

Any cultural or religious group with a diaspora can feel the same.
For instance if you’re from Bretagne/Brittany in France you’ll always find at least a few people from back home in the major cities.
Any other religious diaspora has the same advantages. Good to know people are not alone
Martial arts. I’m not an expat but a digital nomad. Everywhere I go I will go to a gym and have a community and friends.
aye bjj?
