I LOVED the Anne McCaffrey Pern books. I would walk around daydreaming about new adventures set in the books’ world. The Dragonsong books really connected my love of music with my love of fantasy (and animals).
So You Want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane. She once responded to a post I made abt her on Myspace too.
I also loved this one. I feel like it was my first brush with urban magic? Contemporary fantasy? Not sure how to put it. I just liked that they used a car antenna as a wand and were in the middle of the city. Kinda bled into my interest in magical realism and Murakami as an adult.
i honestly wanted to add in this comment that i went right into stephen king after this and have read nothing but horror since aside from a few random thrillers and had no idea how to describe the genre. but i do need to expand. university killed my reading drive and i’m still struggling to get it back. coming to this sub helps as well as having a friend who owns a used book store giving me books to read that she likes lol
Those books were so good… I loved how adult they felt, it made me feel so smart and grown-up. I bet I’d love them more now.
this! i still listen to the audiobook all the time for comfort. it has never worn off. deep wizardy was another favourite
I read the first three books at age 12, too! They really stuck in my head, and when we moved abroad for three years, I kept thinking about them, so reread them again when we moved back. The magic-with-hard-science-explanation, the stakes, and the ambivalence of the Lone Power…. The series is so good!
I heard Diane Diane was going through so hard financial times, so it might be a good time to but copies of her books to give for Christmas
