    From an European perspective, it has always been a point of divergence with my American friends and colleagues. They always want the fattier, more sugar-full version arguing there’s more taste and it’s “real food”, but in our point of view it taste like junk and don’t compete a second with a home-made traditional one (and are pricier !).

      That. Unless Domino’s has a completely different pricing strategy in the US, They are the expensive option.

      I like eating dominos once in a while, it’s a great sweet fatty snack, but it’s not cheaper.

        Can’t speak for the US as a whole but everywhere I’ve lived Domino’s is the cheapest. I can get a medium 2 topping pizza at dominoes for $6.99. We have 3 family run traditional pizza places within driving distance of where I live, for a 2 topping medium pizza they cost: $14.75, $15.99, or $18.99.

        It’s the second cheapest here if you for something you don’t cook at home after buying it frozen.

        Little Ceaser’s would give an Italian aneurysm, buts like 5 bucks for a week of calories.

        Domino’s is way cheaper than an actual Italian pizza in the US.

        It’s also shit pizza, I’d rather buy a frozen one and put my own stuff on it. Then it’s cheaper and better.

      That’s my point about Italy having better ingredients. The assembling of the ingredients is the issue. This is why authentic Italian-American pizza is the best. The bougie places shell out for imported ingredients and cook them in the American style.

        When I was in Venice I only tried a Diavolo at a local restaurant. It certainly could be my American expectations but nothing amazed me about it; definitely feel like a bit more could be done to mesh the ingredients. Or, maybe my American brain just craved sweeter, cheesier stuff.

        Then again, I went to Germany and the bread there was fantastic compared to America, so unless they boarded the sugar train it feels like there must be something that can be done right with good ingredients.

          Venice is a hard place. Pretty much every restaurant is a tourist trap. For good food it is better to have different appetizer sized things in bars and trattorias. Didn’t find a single sit down classical restaurant with good food for reasonable price.

          Yes.

          Just this month I was there and the pizza is a different concept there to be sure.

          Street pizzas of thinly sliced zucchini or potato covering bread rounds with olive oil. That’s pizza in Rome.

          Focaccia bread like crust with some anchovies and potatoe? Pizza.

          Neapolitan style is just a different style again, but the theme is dough is not the delivery agent, it is the primary purpose. The dough is the important bit, with toppings being intended to enhance subtle flavors for it.

          Italian pizza is most similar in American expectations of food typically found there, to flatbread dishes. It’s flatbread with some stuff on top to accent it. There is no cheese on most of the pizza I had in the various parts of Italy I was in. Cheese was not an expected component. Healthy or at least flavorful variations on additions to the dough are the goal.

          Whether you are in Sardinia, Calabria, or Rome; pizza is pizza dough with local additives.

          I have seen French fries on top of pizza in Sardinia, and this was called there “American pizza” :)

          I have not been to Italy, but I have made several of the authentic recipes used as reference in “Modernist Pizza”. I know it’s called modernist, but they go back to the roots before rebuilding.

          I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys food history and techniques regardless of their desire to cook at home.

            And you really think Domino’s is better? I believe the quality of the ingredients used are very, very different. With Domino’s specifically I only had bad experience and only in Europe, but when I was in NYC I tried some slice of NY style pizza and it was ok. But for me it was just a normal pizza like thousands I can have randomly around Italy.

              It was authentic pizza that convinced me it’s true people eat with their eyes. Just deeply off putting and lacking in symmetry.

              Of course it’s better if I put on the completely serious no fun hat. One is a chain the other is not. No such thing as a chain that’s better than non-chain. One is all about consistency and cost-cutting whereas the other is constantly judged solely on quality, usually with only a single shot at it.

    Okay, I’m going to be that guy because I don’t see it being pointed out already.

    That’s not actual Italian pizza, it’s still an Americanized version.

    Real Italian pizza is so thin you have to eat it with a fork and knife and it’s meant for one person, not to share. The one in the picture is still way too thick to be real Italian.

    But real Italian pizza in Italy really is on another level. It’s so god damned good, it makes all pizza in America look like cardboard with sauce.

      i’ve had real italian pizza, in italy. it was fucking delicious, but it doesn’t make the best pies i’ve had in places like new york or chicago taste like cardboard with sauce. some places in nyc can absolutely go toe-to-toe with italy.

      Yeah I don’t think so. They have different kinds of pizza in Italy. When I visited, I ate both kinds (as pictured and as you described). However, no sign of anything resembling Dominoes or frozen pizzas from the US. They were both delicious, but I prefer the slightly thicker and doughy crust seen in OP’s picture.

    Maybe it’s different in the states, but Domino’s is ridiculously overpriced for pizza in the UK (yes I know you can always find a voucher), you can get two neapolitan pizzas and change for the price of some of the pizzas on the Domino’s menu.

    Not really sure how they’re still afloat over here simply beyond existing momentum

        I kinda dig the bland crust. Not for eating, but for not eating. Like, sometimes you’d rather your calories come from toppings, and saving the crust for the next day to dip in those shitty marinara cups when you’re tired as hell is a good thing.

        Like, not often, but sometimes.

        Then again, we don’t do pizza often, and it’s usually when all adults are fucking wrecked via some bullshit or another that pushed us past our limits (both me and my wife are disabled, and my dad is old as fuck lol). If we want pizza to really enjoy I make it myself, or order it from the two yankees that set up a shop in town.

    I know it’s a meme, but this is a dumb take. You’re comparing two very different things, and they serve two different purposes. Sometimes you want to crush some fast food at 2 am after drinking at the pub, sometimes you want to have really good pizza where less is more and the quality of the ingredients matter. Eat both and be happy you have pizza.

    Lore time:

    This was around the 2010. It was about six to seven years since we migrated to New Mumbai - it was a new city, but it was a nice place. Not heavily cramped like Old Mumbai, fresh air, lots of greenery and poor and rich neighbourhoods weren’t seperated. We could only afford eating restaurant food once in a month. I was around 8 to 9 years old. As a lower-class Indian family, eating “American junk” was considered bourgie and posh during those days. When I mean lower-class, I’m talking about having no home appliances, like fridge, washing machine, A.C. or any of those stuff. Just a bunch of sleeping-mats, utensils and an old CRT T.V.

    It so happened that during those days, Domino’s also started advertising their tacos. As kids, me and my sibling were fascinated by this American, “white-people” food. That day, we were supposed to eat some tandoori tikka chicken, roti and non-veg biriyani. We threw a tantrum, asking my dad to buy one of those new taco product - one of those boxes had two “large” tacos. Well, we ordered it.

    And lo, behold, the delivery guy brings in the “American delight”. Well, at first, we were caught a little off-guard, because the box was tiny. Must be just our imagination , we thought. So my dad asks the delivery guy if that was the right order. He gives a weird look and leaves. So, we go running to the basin, wash our hands, and come back prancing. Open the box, and to our horror, we see two tiny, itty-bitty macron-sized tacos (never saw a macron in person, but I’m assuming it must be pretty small). And the taste? It felt like eating wall-paint flakes.

    We ate one of those tacos, and my dad asks if we’re still hungry. Well, we did not complain. That day, both mom and dad slept hungry. ₹110 for a bunch of American crap, and we could have enjoyed a hearty Punjabi cuisine.

    It was also after I started browsing over the internet, that I realised that fast-food restaurants target peasants and wage-slaves in their own land, and ironically, they sell it over here as if one of the many thousand gods kissed the dough while kneading.

    Didn’t order their pizzas using my own money, but when I had the chance to visit my rich classmate’s birthday party, they would bring it, and it tasted like paperboard. This is a story for another time, but what basically happened was that I got a chance to visit a culinary school somewhere in Panvel, and the first-year guy over there made the best, Indi-Italian fusion pizza and pasta. Yes, we didn’t get a large slice, just a few bites, because it was a school trip, and there were a lot of students. But that was the best Italian dish I’ve experienced in my life.

    Moral of the story: Fuck Domino’s and every other fast food restaurants except KFC.

      Memes aside, Punjabi food is definitely in the top tier when it comes to styles of Indian food (and Indian food is top tier already).

        I feel like Punjabi cuisine is over-represented in the west, especially the first one. Almost every “Trying out Indian dish” video is Eastern Punjabi stuff, there’s hardly any Pakistani or alt-North Indian stuff. Not saying that it is bad, but that’s kind of like eating greasy American stuff - eating donuts and cheeseburgers once in a while is fine, but too much is just not good from a health-perspective.

        What’s sad is that you folks haven’t tried Marathi dishes - I had the privilege of visiting Satara and Lonavla, which are two amazing places in Maharashtra, which is extremely under-rated - surprisingly, it is also very much under-represented in Mumbai, perhaps due to the influx of North Indian migrants. Yes, most of it is spicy, even by Indian standards, but they’re amazing. Especially Srikhand and Sabudana Khicdhi (sabudana pearls are made of tapioca, but they’re transparent-coloured, instead of being black like boba pearls). I’d also give a thumbs up to Konkani, Malabari and also (our) Mangalorean cuisine - my favourite being the Udupi-style Masala Dosae paired with Bringal-Moringa Sambar, and also the classic Sheera-Upma combo.

          I feel you, variety is the spice of life (but that’s only after a vicious battle against cumin that could have gone either way).

          That sounds awesome, I’m on the Wikipedia pages for a couple of those rn and you’re spot on. Nothing like it around me, but there is a Pakistani place that does Charsi Karahi with goat and it’s “viable contender for last meal” tier.

          I need to learn how to make some Marathi food, when you said “spicy by Indian standards” you convinced me lol.

          Thank you for sharing all this information and stuff. Not what I expected from a pizza shitpost.
