What flavor or distro do you use?

I used to use Fedora back in 2010 and 2011 on a old Dell laptop.

I might be switching to Linux when Support for Windows 10 runs out in 2025. I refuse to put W11 on my PC, but I need to test is Linux with Steams Proton is the right solution before I commit.

Fedora KDE Spin, I’m not a fan of Gnome. I like that it’s a fairly updated distro but still more stable and dependable than a rolling release distro such as Arch or Tumbleweed. I also like the DNF package manager.

There really is no distro that’s “best for gaming”. Under the hood they’re all running Linux and can run the same software, they’re just configured and packed differently, uses different types of default window managers, compositors, repositories, package managers, app stores, kernel release schedules and so on.

Before asking yourself which distro to use you should look at which window manager you would like to start out using. You can change this quite easily as well in Linux but it’s still a good starting point. A lot of ex Windows users probably prefer KDE, Cinnamon or Xfce.

If you’re a Linux novice and want a fairly familiar look and feel to Windows the recommendation is often either Linux Mint or Kubuntu. You can find a lot of more resources and help online for these distros. Ubuntu is the most popular distro and Kubuntu is just Ubuntu with a default installation of KDE. Mint uses Cinnamon and a lot of new (and old) Linux users really seem to like it.
