  • I think the re-election of the Trump admin after an interregnum of “reasonable liberal governance” dealt a terminal blow to the idea that American electoralism fundamentally moderates the USA’s behavior. And because Trump is throwing shit everywhere, other countries can’t help but gain some first-hand experience of the downsides of that situation, and will act accordingly.

Also, the USA’s internal cultural landscape is fracturing, and there is no-longer an implicit coordinate between the USA’s cultural exports, and the goals of the USA’s political leadership. And so, even if the USA remains a cultural export juggernaut (I think it will), that aspect of it’s soft power will no longer be such a direct tool for it’s leadership. And so I expect that the USA will become a lot more hard-edged in the way it interacts with the rest of the world, simply because the cultural influences will not subtly steer other country’s decision making towards outcomes that the USA favors.

  • I’ve come to conclude that it’s impossible to have constructive discussions about Stalin with western liberals (and most leftists, too). There’s just way too much cultural programming to break through, and you just put yourself at risk of being written off as a crazy person. You’re better off talking about the Soviet Union’s actual record of human development from the 20’s through 50’s, and just sidestep the subject of who was nominally in charge during that period.

  • There’s a lot of sorting that happens to recruits who join the US military. Most army and marine personnel are in supporting roles, and those are generally filled by the higher educated recruits who did have other potential opportunities in life… and then you can imagine who gets to be the cannon fodder on the frontlines, and then who is actually doing the atrocities. It’s perverse.

The air force is where that dynamic is flipped, and the actual trigger-pullers are highly educated, accomplished people who could have done anything else with their life but cause death and misery. They are some of the most contemptible scum in the imperial core.

  • I didn’t make a conscious effort to stop. They got really shitty on their own, and I found more grass-touching activities. I still have accounts on all of the big social media platforms, since people will message me or send me links on them from time to time. But will go months at a time not even thinking about them.

I do spend a lot of time on lemmy and mastodon, as well as groups on the various messaging services (discord, matrix, signal, telegram, WhatsApp, and good 'ol SMS and email). Those are technically the same kind of “social media”. But I think everyone understands now that there’s a categorical difference between real communities of people using a technology to talk to each other, and the skinner boxes.
