They had a mercifully brief rule change where fan noise created a five-yard penalty and a loss of timeout in 1989. I remember the 49ers complaining about the Kingdome noise in the preseason and Seattle losing all three timeouts for the half as a result.

I only watched the first quarter of the game, but the Raiders looked radically different. They came to play and they looked like they were giving the Chiefs their best shot.

For about three or four years, I wrote book reviews for a mid-level newspaper. This was around 5 or 6 years ago, so I hope things have improved…but the number of authors who had autistic characters that were woefully fleshed out was truly disturbing. Like, they would say: this character is autistic, so of course all of their clues are in code! Or, this character is autistic, so of course they know everything about ancient Egypt … and the murder down the road! If only we could convince the character to act like he is in ancient Egypt, he can help us solve the mystery!

It really was quite repulsive over time. This was almost exclusively in the thriller genre.

Russ, unless he suddenly catches fire for the next two years and produces playoff berths, won’t be worth the value of the trade, nor will he be worth the value of the contract.

Essentially, it is how much sunk cost Denver wants to pursue.

The absolute most fascinating thing with Russ, especially now that this has happened across multiple coaches and multiple OCs, is how he can put up gaudy stats on paper and still preside over offenses that seem to struggle to gain yards outside of the “splash” plays. He is also very prone to at least one, maybe two, boneheaded plays a quarter.

This means that Russ will play well enough that the team will be only able to (outside of trades) reach for mid-level talent in the draft and hope they can develop them on the fly.

That said, cutting a mid-performing Russ means that the franchise will probably sink its season for the next few years. While Denver will be able to “rebuild” sooner, the question becomes just how much ownership is willing to bear in losses, both financial and on the field.
