Imo this game had potential that went criminally unrecognized. It had the opportunity to be something that we don’t have in the industry right now in gaming and that being a game in the looter genre that was pure action with Heroes & Villains and not just another Looter Shooter as this one would have focused on The Avengers and Co. All they had to do was model the game after the 4 juggernauts in the genre today being Destiny, Borderlands, The Division, & Diablo. Each Hero / Anti Hero would have acted like a class and thanks to gear & customization all characters had the potential to all look / play vastly different from one another even considering that they may be the same hero. For example there could have been a group of 4 Hulks each looking / playing different from one another where as 1 player would spec as a Tank & Heavy DPS, another would pick Hulk mostly for his large Health Pool and maybe ability to regen Health to a certain degree but specced him heavily into Dex & Stamina that way he’s not slowed down / encumbered and is agile / faster and can still compete against the Tank Hulks as he’ll be able to run circles around them and chip en maybe, and the next guy can lead heavily into Dr. Banner side and create a build / spec into Smart Hulk where he may not be much of a tank and won’t be as much as a heavy hitter but can be reliable and dangerous as the others thanks to Tech that can Buff / Heal teammates while trapping or debuffing the enemy team, and lastly the other player could have made a build / specced around Bruce in the Hulk Buster that would then give him a mix of Offensive, Support & Defensive skills where thanks to the Armor it can all for Hulk to have Ranged attacks, and be faster than the Dex Hulk as he will be able to fly due to the suit, amongst many other things.
Or it would be a amazing spectacle if one of the PvP maps being a Open Hanger and players would fall into 2 teams of 4v4 or 6v6 and they were all different heroes and thus the PvP battle would reference the exact Battle on a Hanger in Civil War. THAT type of PvP would have been INSANELY Fun! Kind of like Marvels take on Star Wars Battlefront’s Heroes Vs. Villains mode but maybe include a “Civil War” type mode where it can be a mix of Heroes & Villains VS. Heroes & Villains. That would have been insanely fun. Etc etc and you can even incorporate Roles like Support / Healers like Hawkeye for constant pressure & a certain build for both Wanda & Strange where they’re made as Healers for their respective teams but could also include debuff type moves to use against the other team.
Hell there can even be Dungeons / Strikes & seasons all named after popular Comic Runs where the story unfolds either via weekly missions for seasonal content, single encounters like strikes from Destiny etc.
There could have even been Raids and that’s where you would have found the big bads of the Universe. For example…
‘The Mad Titan’ -
which would revolve around Thanos with each encounter being against one of the Children of Thanos.
‘Marvel’s First Family’ -
Introduce The Fantastic 4 in season with the finale being a Raid encounter against either Galactus or Doom.
‘Rise of The Lethal Protector’ -
With a season focused on ‘Maximum Carnage’ with BOTH Weekly missions being Venom tracking down another Symbiote leading to the Finale of which would be the Raid ‘Lethal Protector’ where each Encounter is one of the many Symbiotes leading to the final encounter being against Carnage. Hell you could get real creative with this one as well as the season prior to it you can have Secret Weekly missions where you stumble upon criminals being murdered by someone calling themselves… “The Red Slayer” with each week increasing in kills, clues, uncovering the investigation eventually leading to capturing Cletus Kasady which then would lead perfectly into the next season being ‘Rise of The Lethal Protector’.
There could even be Missions based off old Phases / Movies of the MCU and beating them in certain / challenging ways would unlock the MCU Skins.
Like I said the game had potential like crazy! And if they actually cared it could have been the 4th big Juggernaut in the Looter genre and sit amongst Destiny 2, The Division & Borderlands and given the fact that it’s not a Shooter it would have been thee only one of its kind so it would have 100% been a great addition and it would have had a following of both fans from the Looter genre and the fans of the Comics / MCU. But sadly instead the devs were beyond Lazy and instead of trying to make a great game that would have been a smash they instead saw it as a easy way to capitalize off the height of the MCUs Popularity by doing the least amount.
TLDR: -
Marvel’s The Avengers game was criminally underused and had seemingly endless potential. It could have easily been an Avengers style game modeled after Destiny 2 and others. Heroes could have acted as classes (Guardians from Destiny) and with Loot they could have all looked and played very different from one another despite being the same character. They had endless potential for content as well thanks to the vast history in comics and the popularity of the MCU. Game could have had Seasonal content based around comic runs that unfold in weekly missions, or around the current MCU film. Could have included PvP that would have looked and played out in the style of the hanger battle in ‘Civil War’. Could have also included Raids that would focus on the Big Bads of the Universe such as Thanos with encounters being against the children of Thanos up until the final encounter being the Mad Titan himself. And lastly but not least in the style of Planets from Destiny they could included Open Worlds based off where the heroes are from and the way to get there being that everyone has a Sling Ring or that Strange can make portals everywhere. You could see Wakanda, New York, & San Francisco. And in the style of the Tower from Destiny (Hub World) it could have been thee Avengers Compound where you can go around for bounties, interactions, debriefings, Training to learn / practice Builds before setting out on encounters.
I really wish they tried with this game as it seemed obvious what they had to do and they had the resources and money to pull it off as well they just actively chose not too and essentially took the money and then canceled the game outright. The game is now gone it legit feels like a fucking scam!
