I understand you dude. In my mind it’s 15air or 16pro and 13-14 whatever.
For my usage even 16pro isn’t enough for demanding tasks and i knew it. But as a laptop to work, test, enjoy almost best laptop in the market yet. YES!!! Finally i found it!
I switched from 17in laptop so what is less than mba 15in is almost useless for me.
This is a new feature called reveal desktop. You can turn it off: Settings>Desktop&Dock>clear wallpaper to reveal desktop>stage manager

I got you. If you know how to take mlst out of your PC, you should go for pro. Or you know that Air will be enough then go for Air. For your case forget about cpu… it will be cool unless you do 3D simulations or gaming. In this case i suggest even Max! Go and try both beasts at store, you will enjoy it.
I suggest 15in Air.

Beauty and the Beast
Currently MATLAB crashes on Macbooks running Sonoma right after openning. The problem is with xcode 15. Both of these macbooks will be great. But on heavy task (yeah with Matlab :)) consider 60-70degC on cpu and gpu. Fans still remains off thanks to Apple. You wont feel heat on your palm rest or keyboard and it will remain fast, cool and noiseless.
I would suggest air 15 inch with 16gb ram or a base model pro Matlab+simulink with take about 7gb on disk.
This Event main focus is on gaming and maybe they ibtroduce a remake of some horror game with raytracing for mac.
My spidersence tells me MBP 13 will be discontinued for a while.
I would say go for MBP or please consider macbook air 15inch. You can buy it from apple store student price (16gb ram+512gb ssd) around $1580 in US. However, apple event is Oct 30 5 P.T so wait for it and hopefuly prices come down. Also black friday is near and you can find great deals on Amazon too.

Battery, screen, touchpad, fans and cpu performance is so good that yuu will forget your surface. However, window management sucks comparing to windows and linux. Like wth they changed window management on linux?!

GPU is a thing that you will hear about it more at coming event. I used linux for a while and also installed BigSur on my hp laptop.
I’m not using large data/models to take advantage of gpu but even gpu on this laptop exceed my expectations. I can tell you can work with adobe illustrator+photoshop+zoom call with screensharing+safari without any lags and fans off ~45degC. Battery life around 14-22hrs based on usage.
Everything is almost same in Mac. Some shortcut keys are essential to learn. You can find them on youtube. Software support are good and in my case enough. Like windows you can ride a ship… But window management is painful even with theur new feature called stage manger.
I installed and tested pytorch. However, no luck playing with it so far. There is a version on ARM for both tensorflow and pytorch.
If you have any benchmark in mind please let me know.

tbh, for training LLM no one uses laptop. But for ML and NN i can tell. MB smokes my hp zbook 17 by running the code 30x faster. Let me give you a benchmark: https://developer.apple.com/metal/tensorflow-plugin/
Section 4: I can run this on MBP M2 base in 4min:30sec (50sec/epoch) In my zbook it will take 150mins (30min/epoch)!!! Good to mention MB fans turn on after 5 min and i couldn’t hear them and only noticed using software showing me rpm. No noise.
