re: emulation, most of the ones you mentioned are available for Linux. I maintain BizHawk, and dogfood it, so I can give you a personal assurance that it will work (given you pick a “normal” distro which provides Mono).
I’ll also add that if you buy a second disk for Linux (which is a good idea), you’ll be able to use your existing disk for document storage without reformatting it.
