  • South Africa and pretty much just English. Apparently I was fairly fluent in Zulu when I was little kid, before starting school and losing it. And we learnt Afrikaans in school but Afrikaans kids went to Afrikaans schools and I grew up and lived in English speaking areas so it was never used. If I tried to speak Afrikaans now, I would embarrass myself but I can mostly read it and understand someone if they’re talking slow enough and I’m concentrating hard enough.

Honestly something that pisses me off is that despite going through school in the ‘new’ South Africa, the new government never bothered making sure we learnt to communicate with each other. So instead of learning Zulu and being able to freely communicate with the majority of the population, we learnt Afrikaans because they never fucking bothered to change it.

I can also understand very small bits and pieces of written and spoken German from high school but that’s barely worth mentioning. Also, I can kinda sometimes understand a little bit of written Dutch because it’s remotely similar to Afrikaans.

  • My first ever suspension from Reddit was for an anti religion comment. On Reddit. Then after my 3 days were up, the first thread I saw was on the subject of religion, full of people saying worse thing than I had, and in one of the major subs, not even atheism or anything.

I could definitely buy that they’re using AI but personally I always had the impression that they outsource the job and don’t make sure everyone is even on the same page or can read English properly.

Because even the stuff that gets [removed by Reddit] seems to be nonsense a lot of the time. A while ago I saw someone make a post saying something like “Hi guys, haven’t been active much lately. But I’m back and gonna be posting more.” Came back later and it was [removed by Reddit]. So not even that is trustworthy or gives the impression that they actually know wtf they’re doing.

  • Personally, I still haven’t started judging users by the instance that they made their profile on. Unless there’s right wing instances but in that case I’m guessing they’re de-federated from my current experience. I prefer to go by what I’m reading from an individual user or the vibe in a particular community. When you browse instances on the join page, there’s no cliff notes on the turf wars between them. So a lot of users are signing up based on the written description.

  • These kinds of men that are constantly focused on what it means to be a ‘man’ are the biggest fucking insecure snowflakes of them all. These are the kind of people who act like their entire race and gender is being erased when 1 in 10 Marvel movies don’t have a white male lead. When all attention isn’t on them, they spit their pacifiers out and wail.

Take this election for example. It wasn’t about them. Even if they don’t care about queer people (we know they don’t), it was also about doing the right thing for their mothers and their sisters and their daughters. But because the poor, hard done by white man wasn’t given as much importance as people who are literally getting their rights taken away, they decided join the oppressors and spit in their mothers’ faces.

Not because they’re men but because they’re pieces of shit.

  • This is most likely from the DCAU, either Justice League or Justice League Unlimited. Bruce and Diana had a very short lived little courting thing going on or whatever you would call it. And Diana was a bit more forward with it while Bruce was his usual gruff self. They didn’t actually get together though.

    Edit: so animation

Edit 2: “courting”. I took my monocle off and realised the word I was looking for was “flirting”.

  • If it’s a particular community being targeted, I’d probably start with people who aren’t subscribed or don’t contribute but camp out downvoting everything anyway. I mean, to me it sounds very much like this user’s community is being blatantly targeted, so I’m not sure I understand why trends still need to be researched before anything can be done about it.

But I’m not an admin and I actually don’t know what tools you have available to you. I was just under the impression that you could see when people who don’t actually belong to a certain community go there just to downvote everything. Reddit managed to make people fear consequences for downvote brigading though, not sure how they pulled it off.

If this really is something that admins on various Lemmy instances are just too helpless to do anything about, then I apologise for directing my anger towards admins. And then I don’t know what the solution is either because without any sort of assistance in the matter, women are just going to give up even trying to set up spaces here (actually seems like that’s already happened for the most part). And so the culture will just never change.

  • Just went there. Top post is politics, next post is about a touchy feely doctor, there’s a few about body image, more politics, a reminder to not use period tracker apps because the USA government is literally taking women’s rights over their own bodies away, dating advice, more politics.

Looks to me like a women-oriented subreddit for discussing women’s issues, just like it always has. Could you point out some of these ‘femcels’ there to me? Should they be praising the Trump administration, swooning over pervert doctors and sharing Andrew Tate screenshots instead?

Maybe a lot are a bit angry there but I think they’ve got every fucking right to be angry right now. Don’t you?
