  • First off, obvious bias as a Ravens fan.

Second, I actually don’t really think Lamar will win MVP, but as it stands now no one QB is really standing out above the crowd in terms of statistics, so you may as well look at other factors.

What most of the “Lamar has just 9 TDs how can he be front runner” folks are missing (probably because all they’ve done is looked at the box score), and the reason why Lamar is considered the front runner not just here but by Vegas and other news outlets, is because of the obvious impact he has on how a defense is forced to play. Teams need to defend differently against Lamar because of what he’s able to do running, but he’s also progressed as a passer and in the last two games the Cardinals and Seahawks have both been dropping 7 in coverage instead of stacking the box because of how he’s been throwing, and that just leaves the ground game (including Lamar himself) open to gashing the defense for chunk yardage. Then you get to the red zone and defenses have to defend for a pass to Andrews or Lamar keeping it and so Gus gets to hammer it in. It’s ok to disagree with that as a reason for why someone is MVP, but just saying “stats bad” says you haven’t done anything but look at box scores.

  • The justification for Lamar is that no QB is separating themselves from the pack statistically for MVP, and it’s clear from watching the games and not just reading the box score that Lamar has an enormous impact on how defenses are forced to play, and makes the entire offense operate at a different level just by being on the field.
