1 year agoMy husband loves the LoTR books and I bought him The Silmarillion years ago and he never took to it either. I think it’s still in our book collection because I think he feels guilty getting rid of it! I couldn’t get into the original books but adore the movies. Recently we bought the dvd set where all three are extended versions.
I just finished it myself. Well, DNF. I chose it because last month we saw the comedy play Dracula: The Bloody Truth, which was hilarious! The program points out that the play isn’t meant to rewrite the story. The premise is that Professor Van Helsing is pissed off because Stoker got the story all wrong so he hires three actors to present the real story, but of course the people he hires are incompetents who fuck up the production. The four actors play every part.
I found the first half to three quarters of the book to be engaging, especially Lucy’s story. But after that Stoker spends waaay too much time having the characters think about or express just how much they admire each other! I quit and read the Wikipedia page for the ending.
