  • The Apple TV app on the TV is not an AppleTV, which is more like an iPad that uses your TV as the display. In other words you can download apps from the Apple store to the AppleTV, but not to the SmartTV. Your SmartTV will let you download the more popular apps if they’re available, but they’re not Apple apps. If you like Apple’s interface and controls, stick with Apple TV. If you don’t care, you probably don’t need the Apple TV. I didn’t set up an internet connection to my GoogleTV at all. The only thing that has access to the internet is my AppleTV. That way all my data that is collected/purloined/used without my knowledge is from one source only.

  • It totally up to you. I’d do a tone sweep to make sure there aren’t resonances created by the object. The risk with plants is water that could either spill onto the speaker when watering or leak out of the bottom of the pot onto the speaker. If you can afford to replace your speaker when needed, or don’t mind peeling veneer, that risk is up to you. There are things on my speakers seasonally, or an iPad stand with an album cover displayed on it, etc… it’s never bothered me.

There are no hard and fast rules to be part of the audiophile club. Everybody does stuff that will make others cringe, but ultimately, it’s up to you, your ears, your needs. What makes ME cringe is people treating their stuff like mini-dieties, babied to protect resale value, and don’t USE them to their fullest.

  • Your AW absolutely CAN replace your iPhone. You just don’t want it to. We used to wear windup watches that always stopped at the most inconvenient times, and didn’t carry a phone at all. The fact that we can become so dependent on something we didn’t even have when we were kids is pretty amazing. The AW can make and receive phone calls. It can send and receive texts. As far as every day needs, that should be enough. You can order from Amazon at home. You can send and receive emails when you get home or when you pull your iPad air out of your backpack. You can store your passwords at home. You don’t ever really need a phone on you.

If I ditched my phone I’d start carrying a digital camera with me more. I do have a nice one and it is with me a lot, so I don’t even depend on the iPhone that much.
