I just finished this book last week. I, too, listened to the audiobook. I thought the narration was excellent. I had a hard time getting into it at first, as others have mentioned - the slow start. Once I began to care about the characters & get into it, I enjoyed the story.
As it got twisty & creepy, I did begin to suspect it was all something in the house that was making Catalina & then Noemi ill. The fungus angle was very clever as soft horror goes.
I read this book because my daughter’s book club read it in October. Great read for Halloween, right? I don’t like horror, at all. I keep trying it periodically. My daughter compared this book - after I finished it and we talked - to The Girl With All The Gifts. I liked that one less than this one.
I loved the setting of this book. The characters were interesting & mostly believable. The Gothic fantasy of it was beautifully done. The horror was creepy, as it should be. Definitely movie material.
