There comes a point in your life as a expat that you cross the Rubicon and will never feel at ease even/especially in your birth country. I find it typical that you say your French has reached a point that people assume you are a local but somehow stand out as an American. Might want to consider splitting your time between France and the usa depending on the situation how you feel. Go back to the usa for a couple of months to take the edge off. My bet is you will be itching to get back to Paris again because like it or not you rewired your brain and there are things in your life there that makes sense and brings comfort. After a few months then you will be looking to go back to the states. Frustrating I know. Pretty cool life though isn’t it ?
