Good point. It’s also easier (and more useful) to go back and time a bit to far than a bit late.
It would have been too suspicious if he came back to 2016. Although, coming back 30 years earlier was probably a bit too much since he did not succeed in his mission.

I remember the scene when the T-800 boy set off the halon systems. It didn’t affect him, since he was a robot, but the rest the children had to wait til the gas cleared.
