Heh. Someone needs to tell them that wired connections will always be faster, more reliable, and less expensive in the long run.

That’s going to be pretty constraining. I don’t think you necessarily need 500 most of the time, but 70 is just to little for 6 people at once.

Most of the time, you’ll probably be fine, but there will definitely be times where your network gets so congested that your video streams and gaming performance will suffer.

This is even worse if you’re moving to something like a wireless connection, where packet loss is going to be worse, or a satellite connection, where latency will be higher.

My experience has been:

• Coax connections will just stop. These rely on boosters and repeaters that are powered by the grid.
• Cable TV will work for an hour or two.
• VoIP phones will last until the UPS battery dies.
• Cellular will work, but will be bogged down and possibly revert to older, slower modes.

So your cellular hotspot is your best bet during a regional power outage, but be aware that even this will be slower than normal and may even stop working after hours or days, as cell sites lose backup power.

Don’t mess with mesh gear. Just get a good router and enough access points to cover the area you need. This mesh stuff is annoying to set up and use; I have a TP-Link mesh system just sitting in a box in my room.

As far as getting Ethernet near your boat… a fiber run will do exactly what you need; you can use a fiber converter or small switch with SFP adapter at the end near your boat and either mount an outdoor access point, or put the converter and AP inside a weatherproof ABS electrical box.
