2·15 days agoCheck out Nginx Proxy Manager. it automates the process of setting up a reverse proxy server for you. You will need your own domain name to make it work.

2·15 days agoIf you don’t want to use Portainer, there is alternative called DockGe. I tried it, and eventually came back to Portainer. But I know a lot of people really like it. It should work with Podman too.

10·15 days agoThis video is from last month, but the trend line keeps going up for North American internet traffic attributed to Linux devices 🙂

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Private DNS (with ad blocking)English
4·15 days ago+1 for both Quad9 and AdGuard.
I run AdGuard Home and all of the devices in my home use it for DNS.
In the last 24 hours, 41% of the DNS queries on my network were blocked as a tracker or ad.

2·15 days agoWhen I was a newbie, my first project was also Nextcloud. Honestly, Nextcloud is overkill if all you need is to host a calendar. You can probably find something that meets your needs (like Radicale ) at Awesome Self Hosted.
If you are getting started in self hosting, you should spend a little time learning Docker . It’s a tool for hosting software in individual containers on your local computer. You will find that many self-hosted apps have installations for Docker container versions in their documentation.
For me, once I understood docker, and also Portainer , a web UI for Docker, I got over the learning curve and was able to install most Foss apps I found online. Good luck!

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•please recommend a simple selfhosted photo galleryEnglish
51·15 days agoI have a use case where I use Next Explorer to share some directories with photos in them for others to see online. Clean, simple UI and no database, it just indexes your directories. PWA works well on phones.
It does run on docker though (like many, many foss apps). 🤷

11·3 months agoIt sounds like you are ready to learn about self-hosting your own media and using services like Jellyfin and Navidrome to access your media.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is Plex really Self Hosting?English
56·4 months agoNo, Plex is not self-hosting. Once they tried to get me to purchase a Plex Pass for remote access, I knew I needed something else that didn’t have a paywall.
That said, many people find their way to better services like Jellyfin by first using Plex and coming to this same conclusion, so I am not going to write off the Plex people yet. They will figure it out one day 🙂

Android@lemmy.ml•Why apps force to use locked-down Android with spyware ?English
3·6 months agoI have a degoogled phone (LineageOS) and I was able to get my banking apps working by isolating them in a work profile using Insular and also putting MicroG and Aurora Store in there. MicroG tricks the apps into thinking you are connected to Google Play Services. IMO its better than having a 2nd or 3rd phone.

32·7 months agoThat book was about the Free Town Project. That ended in 2016. The Free State Project came later.
If you read the book, they talk about the launch of the Free State Project at the end.
I recommend it. Very good read.

A lot of people on my team schedule focus time to be left alone.
