Debian 11 uses X11 as default if you uses KDE. And it is still super is super easy to change from Wayland to X11 in KDE IN Debian 12.
X11 might be abandoned at this point in time. But it still works well. Wayland still don’t work as well as X11 so I will be using X11 for the next few years.
I plan to test Waland in Debian 13 that will be released in 2025. If Wayland is still broke then I will continue using X11. I don’t think X11 will be going anywhere anytime soon since Wayland has so many issues
I know that don’t need to recompile x11 for the next 2 years since I am currently gaming on Debian stable. The next version should arrive in 2025.
There has been no talk about removing X11 yet (as far as I am aware). So I will expect that I can run X11 without issues unto 2027.
I hope that Wayland would run smoothly by then.
It has been taken way to long to get Wayland to run on pair with X11 if you ask me.
So you are one of them that expect people like me to buy a new card to be able to run Wayland?
I dont plan to do this since I think it is waste of money since X11 just work.
If I should buy a new card today then I think I might stick to Nvidia since they have the more power efficient cards. And I dont care much about if I use Wayland or not
No of course I don’t expect people to change video cards just for wayland.
But from the way you write in your posts, you make wayland look inferior or immature, when in fact it is only a problem of nvidia users.
To run Linux you also have to take into account the hardware to be used. And choosing nvidia for a linux system can make sense for many purposes, but you have to be aware that it brings some pretty stupid driver limitations and that limits you with wayland.
Wayland does not suck and is more than ready to replace the default gnome and plasma sessions. Let’s just hope nvidia will wake up and seriously start improving its crappy drivers.
Debian 12 will be well supported well past 2024…
Anything past Debian 10 uses Wayland by default, and just because the OS is supported, doesn’t mean all the software it’s built on is as well.

It’s okay if you want to stick to x, Linux is all about choices. …
But may come the day where you will need to compile and run x11 by yourself.
And don’t know which gpu you have but remember that wayland as of today is totally fine on amd and intel gpus.
Especially with amd + plasma.

On nvidia gpu… The problem is all there.
Nvidia isn’t putting much effort on wayland and they decided to implement teir own propietary implementation of the driver.
I have an amd desktop pc and i can assure that wayland runs like a breeze.
Fast, smooth, and working VRR with plasma :)
