Who’s everyone’s QB1 next year coming out of the draft. Thought it would be cool to see this post this time next year and see who the real couch GMs are. I think Penix is the best QB in college right now but his age has most people concerned and he’s had his share of injuries. Caleb Williams was most people’s QB1 until a couple weeks ago, then I think most people fell in love with Maye. But the past 3 weeks he’s looked bad against weak ACC defenses. Right now everyone is raving about Jayden Daniel’s TD to INT ratio and comparing him to Burrow with Joe having much better WRs. Who cares where we might draft if we had the 1st pick and didn’t have to sell the farm to get it who are you pounding the table for? I have to say Daniels he’s done great this year and he could be the next great Mobile QB.
I am going to preface this by saying that I’m a Ducks fan, but it’s Bo Nix. The guy doesn’t make mistakes, and rarely misses a pass with a historical 78.6% completion percentage (currently an NCAA record.) We’ve got a good backfield so we aren’t using his mobility (he played like a dual threat QB last year.)
One thing everyone who doesn’t watch him fails to realize that he gets benched fairly often when we’re blowing teams out. Everyone dickrides Daniels for putting up 8 touchdowns but he plays down to the final seconds in blowouts and stat pads — meanwhile Bo goes for 400 yards and 6 touchdowns in the first half, before sitting out the entire second half, he could’ve stayed in and thrown for 600 yards and 8 touchdowns but didn’t.
Despite this he’s leading the NCAA in passing yards and only 3 passing touchdowns behind Daniels. Granted Daniels is an electric runner, I’ll give that to him.
It’s Caleb / maye however order you want to put em, Nix (apparently) / Daniels, and then everyone else.
UW fan here. Penix has been off since the Oregon game. He’s a different guy. Don’t know if he carried a knock or what, but the guy who was dropping dimes and then not playing in the third quarter is gone.
Which is a shame, because if UW has that guy, they will win the natty.
Been watching all their games and I agree. I suspect he’s playing through an injury.
Kind of disagree here. He went 370/4 against Stanford. And Utah, Oregon St and WSU are like top 20 defenses. That game @Oregon St was in a monsoon, there were a ton of dropped passes and he was still stacking dimes and led his team to the W. UW’s running game and defense has come alive(both ranked in the 90s-100s) so he hasn’t had to throw as many attempts as he did early in the year. His stat lines aren’t as huge but he’s leading the team to victories. He’s got that X factor you can’t really measure.
His throws can be accurate, but they take so long to arrive. So much loft on his balls. It works at the NCAA level in the style of offense UW runs, but an NFL defense with speed will pick him off left and right. He should have had multiple picks in the Apple Cup
Are people really dragging on Penix for his age? Being 23/24 and coming out of college for a QB isn’t an exception anymore
It’s the more the age WITH the injuries. He had 4 season ending injuries in his first 4 seasons. His ACL twice and his shoulder twice.
When he starts getting hit in the NFL it’s gonna be way worse. I think penix is the best QB right now in college but with that history and how it usually translates in the NFL isn’t good. You got bigger faster stronger people hitting you in the NFL. I hope I’m wrong whether he plays for us or not but it’s not a good recipe.
Sam Bradford 2.0
Obviously college is pretty high variance and I haven’t watched much of these top QBs this year, so maybe I caught him at a bad time - but Penix looked awful this past weekend against a pretty mediocre team in the Cougars. He didn’t look particularly fluid, quick, athletic, or even just elusive in the pocket. His throwing motion hurt my eyes and my shoulder to watch. His accuracy was, generously, mediocre. Combine that with being one of the older QBs in the draft and an injury history most NFL QBs won’t even rack up in an entire career, yeah I would put him very low on my list.
Yikes…sounds like glass jaw Jimmy G all over again.
Yeah it would be stressful as hell watching him feeling like every play could be his last.
It’s also because of the type of offense he is in.
Penix has a purely NCAA arm. His throws are too lofty with too much hang time. It works in the offense he is running in college, but at the pro-level he will be picked left and right. In the last game against WSU he should have had three interceptions that were dropped/mishandled by the DBs, and he had multiple overthrows.
Age matters if any of our players got a second contract lmao but that rarely happens
At this point, when no one is playing consistently like a #1 QB, I would say none of them are. If you have to talk yourself into a guy, better off drafting some other position.
Thats why you are a fan
Tell me how often overdrafting a QB works?
There have been many recent posts about the upcoming draft, in reality it’s MUCH too early to even tell. Raiders are in position to possibly draft QB3/4 right now as it stands. This likely means Daniels, Penix, Nix or McCarthy depending on how you view the QBs.
Lots of things can and will change between now and end of April. If we retain AP then Daniels seems like a strong possibility due to their connection from ASU. He can throw to all levels and is a very dynamic runner. His size (weight) and some decision making may cause some to pause. Penix is a big armed left handed QB (who I think Buccs will make a strong move for), he has an injury history and accuracy at times may cause some to pause. Nix is super hot right now. Has a big arm, can be mobile if needed, some will question if it’s a system fit or if moving from SEC to Pac12 to face “lower” competition will hurt him. McCarthy is another WB people are hot on. Of course in their run first system have we seen enough of his QB talent to equate that to NFL.
Penix and Nix will be playing against each other this Friday in Allegiant so the team should get an at home look at two of the selections.
There’s also the fact that first round QB’s hit rate is around 35%. That’s with all tools available to a modern nfl scouting department. Everything from computer models, background checks, interviews, and a whole bunch of other things. But even with all that we haven’t figured out a way to get it right even half the time.
The Panthers just took Bryce Young over CJ Stroud and nobody batted an eye. Stroud looks like the best rookie QB in a decade but in April everyone thought Young was the better prospect. Evaluating QBs is weird.
Is Young really 5’7”? Come on man! Ask Arizona how that works out. SMH
Fit and circumstance plays into it A LOT. If Young went to the Texans and Stroud to Carolina then Young might look like the better of the two right now.
If Champ and the majority of the scouting department are NOT at the Pac12 Championship then thats borderline a fireable offense
Do you see a scenario where he drops and we are able to draft him?
That GPA award honestly means more to me than the rest. Book smart
I have Caleb Williams slightly over Drake Maye. If both reach their potential, Williams is basically somewhere between Kyler Murray and Patrick Mahomes. Drake Maye would be athletic Carson Palmer. After those two, it’s a matter of preference. I have JJ McCarthy and Jayden Daniels QB’s three and four because they have higher ceilings than Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. Nix and Penix Jr have higher floors than the aforementioned two.
I really don’t like Maye or Williams for us. I’m in on AOC better oline, draft best Corner/safety/dline
Skipping on a qb would be a huge mistake.
They’re taking someone somewhere
I like his arm talent, but it just seems like a relatively mobile QB is such an advantage at extending plays and letting WRs get open. AOC just isn’t a guy that is going to extend plays with his legs.
I don’t hate AOC I would like to see what he could do with a better line. His pocket escapability reminds me of post injury DC. Would love to see a O/D line heavy draft.
Our O-line is average. AOC is not getting any more mobile.
Roll with Farva and enjoy a 4th round contract for a minute. He’s smart and can make every NFL throw. Give him an offseason and build a good team around him like the bengals did with Dalton or the Seahawks with Russ.
Spend the first round capital and try to build on the defense and if there’s a QB available in the second that’s worth a shot get him. This is a deep QB class which usually means teams are clamoring to get one of the big ones and we could probs land a stud on D.
JJ
!remindme1year
He’s 6th on my list and it’s mainly because he doesn’t have to do much. Maybe I’m wrong but he just hasn’t wowed me this year I see the other QBs doing more.
I’m fully entrenched in the Bo “knows” Nix camp. Big arm, can literally make any throw, mobile when needed but can win from the pocket, on pace to be the most accurate QB in college football history… pause… read that again… known to be a tremendous leader and is one of the only college players I’ve ever heard of that is apart of coaches meetings.
Some awards he’s a finalist for;
Davey O’Brien: (most prestigious QB award)
William V. Campbell: (outstanding on field play, 3.2 or higher GPA, and exemplary leadership on/off the field)
Johnny Unitas Golden Arm: (top upperclassmen QB)
Heisman: (no explanation needed)
I’m telling y’all, he’s the best QB in this draft.
Im with you, his only downside is the system he plays in now. Do you think he plays in the senior bowl this year ?
He’s being picked in the first or second by most mocks and is the favorite to win the Heisman. I think it’s highly unlikely he plays in the senior bowl.
Agree. Nix is the best available QB on the board.
That’s for the comment I haven’t watched him much at Oregon but always loved his tenacity when he played at auburn. I feel like he’s a better version of Baker. It’s hard for me to put one QB over another since they are coming to a different league. But I’d be happy with him or Daniel’s if we don’t have to jump up for them.
Do you see a scenario where he drops and we are able to draft him?
That GPA award is valuable
Look putrid his entire time at Auburn, only looked good once the team around his was good, 65% of his total yards is YAC, I’m cool
I think Penix is the best QB in college right now but his age has most people concerned
Several these guys have been in college for a long time, in part because of Covid
Nix is 23.8 years old Penix is 23.5 Daniels is 22.9
Williams and especially Maye and McCarthy are younger
I don’t follow college ball too much, but since Jimmy has been benched I’ve been keeping tabs on the QBs. I say this with limited knowledge, but I have a weird, strong feeling about Jayden Daniels.
Ewers will be the best one
I have to go Bo Nix, He barely misses a pass. Great athlete too.
This is my pick if I had #1 overall.
