I remember reading Caliban and The Witch and saying something about some paintings like this, which used to use either vegetables, farming equipment and the like to make it look like a human, and how then that shifted to springs, machines, pistons, and so on, representing the shift to a mechanical life after the invention of the clock, and so on.
