Gannon was a great athlete but the guy had a noodle arm, he was a smarter and more durable Jimmy G basically, it just worked really well in the style of offense the Raiders ran at the time. NFL athletes are too fast for that offense to work anymore.

People just get WAY too focused on the fact he went Round 4.

After the draft, that shit literally doesn’t mean ANYTHING. You judge them based on how they’re playing and he’s playing great.

Dak, Brady, Purdy. Round 4, 6, and 7.

      The rare exceptions.

Now list all the QBs drafted in the same rounds during the same timeframe.

Most of them disappeared into the ether.

Get AOC a QB coach thats going to make him more mobile and pass out of the pocket, he cant be a statue in the pocket and make it happen like at Purdue.

But hes growing, look at how he corrected him fumbling 3x in his first game vs the Chargers

I’ll take Gannons take on this over any idiots in this sub. AOC is doing decent in a situation that is far from desirable. If a top qb prospect falls to the second or 3rd take em and let them battle it out . But first things first, beef up the line.

This. Look at the eagles. Wentz wins mvp next season breaks his shit. Win the ship with Foles. Ship off Foles. Ship off mvp wentz. Go for another qb in the draft.

Gotta keep trying till you get one. You won’t go far in the playoffs without a QB who can scramble. Doesn’t need to be Michael Vick but he needs to be able to MOVE. Unless youre the second calling of Payton mannning and can call an offense out of your ass you gotta be able to run now.

The Eagles are just as much a really good team because they are built well through and through while also being coached up properly.

Before folks jump to conclusions about what this article says about the Raiders, allow me to summarize the article’s contents:

    • Mostly via quotes from Rich Gannon and Trent Dilfer, it talks about how teams don’t coach protections well enough and players don’t know how to protect themselves
    • Talks about how coaching and player turnover has exacerbated these problems
    • As a result, the league currently has 8 very inexperienced “backup” quarterbacks starting
    • Gannon gave examples of 3 successful quarterbacks who excelled at protecting themselves in different ways

It closed with brief comments by Gannon on each of the “backups” that are currently starting. I put “backups” in quotes because of the 8, 2 of them have won the job over former-starters that are now healthy, and thus are really starters now: Will Levis and Aidan O’Connell. Gannon’s comments on these two particular QBs were contrasting and interesting:

Levis: “He’s one of these guys that when you’re the youngest kid in the neighborhood he wants to challenge all the kids to see how far he can throw it, he’s that guy. The accuracy and the decision-making and the lack of experience is a problem.”

O’Connell: “He’s got a lot of the intangibles you like — he’s poised, he’s comfortable in the pocket, he’s got good feet, good mechanics, he makes all the throws, he doesn’t get rattled, when he makes a mistake he’s able to quickly turn the page and come back. I think that kid’s got a chance.”

I hope this kid gets another shot next season. I’m all for drafting a QB but this dude so far has earned his spot at QB1

      That is a wild statement.
He has shown his physical limitations.
He has a decent to good feel for the game that comes with his maturity and age, but the arm isn’t there and with how old he is it’s not gonna get better to compete with all the freak arms we have in the league now.
His arm being better than Jimmy’s is too low of a bar for him to be given next years job.

He’s gonna have a long career and make boatloads of cash as a premier QB2. He’s that guy you want making spot starts when your QB1 goes down because he will run the full system and be good enough to keep a team afloat. What AOC is not is one of the best 32 QBs on the planet(IQ + elite athlete.) He’s doing an admirable job and I’d love to roster the kid for the next decade. But he can not and should not be the Raiders top option breaking camp in any given year.

I’m going to reserve that judgment until the end of the season, so far I like what I’m seeing given his/this franchise circumstance.

          Boatloads probably not.
He won’t get another contract until he’s 29.
And if he ends up behind a QB that doesn’t miss time there probably won’t be a reason for him to get a contract.
Especially since teams will probably just take chances on failed talent.

Yeah personally I think I’d stick with a guy with experience in the NFL rather than a college rookie. I mean have you seen Caleb Williams tape? Aidan looks way better.

You draft a rookie, you have to go through growing pains, unless you have a great line to protect them. Raiders line isn’t great. Look at Bryce Young constantly running for his life, and then compare that to Stroud playing behind a top OL.

        We need to draft defense.
