It’s funny how polarising this is. Absolutely valid opinion, but I couldn’t disagree more strongly. I thought it was a really great way of highlighting that actually all these characters are a result of their trauma and not necessarily good or bad, but flawed humans with realistic motivations.
Clearly it was a big risk though because many people share your view.
I honestly couldn’t see this game ending another way. Maybe these characters find redemption or peace in the future, but for now, they can only deal with the price of exacting their revenge.
I objectively understand what they did and why they were doing it. But so many people loved the first 1 and the characters there the twist in the second one kind of stopped it being as fun or enjoyable with the new characters unfortunately.
TLOU2 was an absolute technical and polish marvel. The decor, the atmosphere, the music, the lighting, etc… sure the gameplay wasn’t anything groundbreaking, but you don’t play TLOU for the gameplay. Voice acting was top notch as usual.
The story is what I felt was wrong. Playing as Abby, meh, I disliked it but it wasn’t a deal-breaker for me, even tho I was constantly distracted by her uncanny physique. It’s all of the other bullshit that went with it, especially the final confrontation between Ellie’s friends in the theater and Abby. Then when you finally had the choice to finally kill Abby, you just… Don’t?!
At least make it a player choice for fuck sake. To me it felt like all the losses Ellie went through went completely meaningless
I liked the game. Don’t think it was bad, didn’t think it was great. Solid 7/10 for me and nothing compared to the first game.
I’m really looking forward to the HBO adaptation though; my biggest problem with TLOU2 was that they tried very hard to make me feel guilty about killing people/dogs/etc, when it is inherently fun to kill things in that game. You can’t preach about how bad the cycle of violence is when they give you no choice to avoid said violence and have the best parts of the game be focused around sneaking about murdering things.
Always thought that TLOU2’s story would work far better as a book/show where you are passively watching, not actively participating.
This is also exactly why people hated the treatment of Joel in 2. You spend an entire game forced into his shoes/role of “hero” and it really affects your perception of him. With player agency removed, I think the show had more breathing room to portray the dark side of his actions.
Last of Us 2
That game had plot holes you could dive a cruise ship through. LOVED the first one. But holy crap wtf were they thinking with 2?
To be honest the first games ending also has plotholes you could drive a cruise ship through as well. So at least the series is consistent that way.
Like everything else, this is also a legitimate choice.
