Is it a certain number of days? Until it smells off? Until it’s got visible mold?

until visible mold and / or bad smell

depends on whether it’s a store-bought with preservatives or something I made at home - fresh stuff lasts maybe a 1 - 2 months max, store-bought could maybe last 3 months at most?

I find pizza sauce and other red sauces like that don’t tend to last like 4 - 6 months, they tend to get mold growing on the top. Even my tomato paste gets mold, so I like to put a little vinegar on the top (like you would add lime juice to guacamole to prevent it from oxidizing and browning), and that usually makes it last much longer / prevents mold. (Yay for acetic acid!)

EDIT: the numbers of months are low-quality guesses, take them with a grain of salt

They go bad pretty fast. Mold spots within a week in my experience. I always try to use it all.

Personally, I keep it until it’s got mould. The days recommended really depends on how many times the fridge is opened and how long the fridge is opened for.

Example: I’ve had a opened tub of hummus in my fridge for 2 months and it’s still been fine. I also eat yogurt way past its best before date, so. Shrug None of it would last a week in a share house.

Depends on the food item, but for tomato/pizza sauce, it’ll be the mould if you haven’t cross contaminated the sauce with something else (ie scoop out sauce with spoon, touch spoon to pizza dough, scoop more sauce with same spoon; or wiping finger along rim, licking off finger, and repeat).

I always assumed they were such small jars because they’re I tended to be single use

I got pretty bad food poisoning once from tomato sauce that had been in the fridge for a bit over a week (I think it was in an open carton though). Definitely be careful. I personally wouldn’t store it longer than 2-3 days.
