    Owner was getting burnt out and tried to spread out the work by bringing on extra admins, but it turned out to still be too much. Ended up shutting the server down as they couldn’t resolve the issues they were having. Thankfully they provided ample warning, so most communities on the instance have found other homes.

      I’m not a very tech savvy person, so forgive me if this is a dumb question. But does that mean that each instance of Lemmy is personally paid for by whoever owns it? How can that be sustainable?

        It isn’t sustainable at scale and the devs have stated that they don’t see it as an issue since they don’t want a single instance getting too big.
