❗️Layan Nasser, Anglican Palestinian student in the occupied West Bank, freed from Damon prison

Palestinian Christian Layan Nasser, a 25-year-old member of St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Birzeit, has been released from the Israeli’s Damon Prison following the completion of her seven-and-a-half-month sentence. Nasser has since reunited with her family in the occupied West Bank. Her release marks the conclusion of her third period of imprisonment by Israel.

Nasser’s latest incarceration began in October 2025 when she was taken into custody to serve a sentence handed down in absentia by an Israeli military court. The retroactive charges stemmed from her nonviolent undergraduate university activism in 2021 with the Democratic Progressive Student Pole—a Birzeit University student bloc that Israel unilaterally designated as an “unlawful association.”

Her legal team noted at the time that military authorities had structurally manipulated the proceedings by falsely stating the trial hearing had been postponed, only to convict her in her absence. The weaponized legal campaign against Nasser had previously drawn intense scrutiny from international religious leaders, including the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Chelmsford, Dr. Guli Francis-Dehqani, who condemned the use of rolling judicial mechanisms against Palestinian youth.

Nasir had previously spent two months in military detention in 2021, followed by an eight-month stint in administrative detention without charge or trial between April and December 2024. While local rights groups and church organizations celebrated her return to Birzeit, they emphasized that Nasir’s arbitrary cyclical detentions reflect a broader, systemic policy of judicial overreach used to suppress academic expression and civil mobilization.
