Technology is supposed to be simple, intuitive, basic and convenient.

But my experience today, has been infuriating, stress-inducing and unnecessarily excessive. I had to go to my local bank branch today to sign a PAL loan. I wouldn’t have had to go in-person, if it wasn’t for the overly annoying way my bank has to verify you. The digital signing document they sent me? Required a fucking verification. Like, to even ask for a PAL loan, you need to put down your information. So, why in the FLYING FUCK, do you NEED to verify me when I just gave you everything needed to know me by?!

Then, they wanted me to add my numbers to the settings for preferred contact. I kid you not, I had to have 3 codes sent to my phone number PER section. Home? 3 Codes. Mobile? 3 codes. That’s SIX codes I had to have gone through, JUST TO FUCKING REGISTER A PHONE NUMBER!!! And STILL, the fucking digital verification system they have, DOESN’T SEND ME IT! So I had to drive the fuck down to my bank, because I didn’t want to fucking go out today and deal with dumbfucks (I already dealt with dumbfucks at work, don’t need more).

Had to spend, oh, 50 minutes there, WAITING FOR SHIT THAT COULD’VE BEEN DONE IN 1 MINUTE!!

Then I get the fuck home, realized “shit, I need to talk to StateFarm about my beacon” because it hasn’t fucking worked for some reason. Forgot my login, but wait, shit! The fucking browsers I use - SOMEHOW FUCKING FORGOT MY LOGIN INFORMATION BECAUSE REASONS!!!

Had to fucking talk to a god damn live chat representative, go through THAT fucking obstacle course. THAT WASN’T ENOUGH! I HAVE TO FUCKING VERIFY TO LOG IN WITH MY TEMPORARY PASSWORD AFTER UPDATING IT?! YOU FUCKING CUNTS!! I FUCKING HATE YOU!!

And Chrome seems to have it where, it doesn’t sync with mobile and desktop as I feel it should. The fucking Chrome browser on phone, REQUIRES you to fucking add a fucking security measure so you have to enter a fucking pin EVERY TIME YOU WANT TO FUCKING SO MUCH EDIT OR ACCESS SAVED PASSWORDS!

FUCK THIS BULLSHIT! FUCK ALL OF IT!!

My lower tech thermostat must be set to either heating or cooling mode. Why the fuck doesn’t it just cool if temp is above a high threshold and heat if it is below a low one? I’m guessing because it was gimped to make the higher end ones look better and the developer went for the cheapest possible that looked nice (just like the worst oven I’ve ever had).

i just helped… well, tried to anyway… someone with their facebook. they have the app on their phone. they use it every day. facebook knows this, and knows their cell phone number and email address. she knows her password.

login on brand new pc: sorry that account has been disabled… something about failing verification… not even a 2fa attempt offered. just sorry, you’re screwed. and you can’t ‘appeal’

My aunt has had at least a dozen Facebook accounts over the years – that I know of. Pretty much every time she gets a new device, she makes a new Facebook account that she apparently only uses on that device. And then she has also created new accounts on other peoples’ computers and devices, like she went to my grandma’s house for a few weeks so she created an account on their computer which she only ever accesses when she’s there at their house on their computer. Every time she gets a new phone, new Facebook account. Got a Facebook account on my cousin’s phone.

And yet me? I tried to create a new Facebook account specifically for my work one time a decade ago and because I did not want work and personal stuff intermingled on my social media. Because of that attempt at creating a duplicate account, I was banned from my personal account permanently and I have never been able to successfully set up a new account since then (though I admit I haven’t tried in a while).

So, I guess what I’m saying is that none of what you said surprises me in the least.

Look into a password manager. You shouldn’t have to remember any passwords except for your one single master password (which you should have written down and stored somewhere safe). Then, with your password manager, generate a unique password PER SITE/LOGIN. You don’t want to reuse passwords. Let the password manager do the generating and remembering.

Some solid options would be KeePassXC (locally stored as a file), Bitwarden (browser extension / app), or Proton Pass (browser extension / app).

I understand tech can be frustrating, but there are tools out there that can hopefully make things easier. Its mostly knowing where to find them and how to use them. If you need help with anything, let me know and I (or probably anyone else here) can try to point you in the right direction.

I write complex odd ball passwords myself, and store them all in a notebook. Ive gone backwards. For me, I find this much easier than researching/installing a password manager I can trust. I dont trust anything but my notebook at this point. I like the intentional inconvience, I feel more agency this way. Yeah it’s stupid, but it’s my stupid

Personally, I’m on Vultwarden, but I think the thing that concerns me more in that article is the removal of transparency and replacing it with trust.

They literally went from I’ll show you to trust me, bro…

Did you read the update on that very same article?

Update: After publication, an employee on the Bitwarden subreddit said that “Always free” had been restored on its pricing page, calling it an “oversight” by the marketing team. The product page for Bitwarden’s personal password manager remains unchanged.

Eh, even if it was a “mistake” I want to know why they’re even tinkering with it in the first place.

Just a weird vibe, I’ll be moving off it when I get some time.

Did you miss that the new CEO wasn’t publicly announced and he’s one of those private equity guys who comes in to get businesses ready to sell?

When a business brings in a new CEO and/or sells, the new leadership/owners are within the rights to completely change how it all works and get rid of promises from prior leadership/owners.

There is no legal mechanism to hold them to such promises made by prior leadership.

So why are you so unsure it will stay unchanged on the word of an employee whose job is probably PR and damage control. Companies don’t just come out and announce they’re going to fuck you. They do it piecemeal so you’re the frog slowly boiling in the pot, too stupid to hop out because you haven’t noticed the slowly rising temperature.

Its open source though. Why should I be concerned about them selling their services of hosting free and open source software? There is no legal mechanism for them to avoid the code being forked.

They didn’t get rid of the promises. They added them back.

I don’t know what gave you any indication that I am unsure about them still offering a great service. They are a champion of the open source ecosystem, and it doesn’t look like that is going to change.

I understand if you want to move. Thats fine. Do you.

But for me, this is a non-issue. There is no better alternative.

So fuckin’ legit. I have no idea how, or why multi-million dollar companies repeatedly shit the bed with customer service, I’m sure they thought up some insane neo-liberal reason for being AWFUL, but all it does is eventually drive customers away; forcing them to find alternatives to their shit-show of a company, even if the new company doesn’t provide the same services; but, why would that matter if the old company couldn’t provide without jumping through all those fucking hoops?

Luckily the only complaints I have are that two of my banks only offer 2FA over text messages which is incredibly insecure, but again, they just don’t give a fuck.

Internal software like that is always treated as a cost center, so any improvement is a capex that won’t bring in revenue. At best it might reduce churn, but unless it’s extremely bad nobody will be able to connect the dots.

Source: I’ve written software like this a bunch in my career and it’s always frustrating

I agree. I love tech where it makes my life easier, but if you look at everywhere it has been applied, it’s just easier and/or cheaper for the service provider or vendor - and almost always more inconvenient for the user

Ptoblem here isn’t technology its shoe horning gadget buzzword gizmo fetishism into everything for no reason without understanding any of it or why you’re doing it you’re right that everything you did was pointless bullshit and a dude with a formula and a ledger he wrote in ink or a spreadsheet program from 1994 in front if him would have beeeneasier less demeaning and more effective with fewer broken promises but we live in a world governed by insane delusional pedophiles who hate that you exist because they have no more surface area on their boots uncovered by tounge and the existence of things that aren’t then is inherently violence against them or something so the gadgets and gizmos and broken promise cargo cult computetimg must continue I guarantee its worse for people who actually do understand computers its stupid its violent its wasteful and its going to destroy the world but it is structurally unavoidable in the current system
