I recall watching a movie that was in English with Japanese subtitles, there was an interrogation scene where the characters were talking: the interrogator said to the suspect: “You’re an accessory” (for the crime in question) but “accessory” via the Japanese subtitles mistranslated that into 小物 (which means accessories: as in supplementary items like purses, belts, etc). when the context leans closer to 共犯者 (“accomplice”).

I mean, can mistranslations still occur when watching a film with Spanish, German, Russian, Portuguese or Finnish subtitles for instance when you understand the original dialog in English? The same applies vice versa: when watching a foreign language film then the subtitles not translating the dialog correctly due to cultural differences or ignorance on the translator’s end by not considering the nuances and semantics of the dialog?
