Also, in D&D 5e (2014), you just roll a single d4, then add 1 and multiply it all by 3 (or multiply by higher than 3 if upcast), instead of rolling 3 dice: https://www.sageadvice.eu/magic-missile-do-you-roll-the-same-d4-for-all-darts/
I don’t know of anyone who actually does that at home tables, because 3d4+3 is statistically less likely to give the minimum (or maximum) damage than (1d4+1)*3.
I’m sorry but this is just wrong. From PHB 2014:
Each dart deals 1d4 + 1 damage and there are 3 darts, so 3d4 +3 damage.
