A Gallup poll in 2024 revealed that around a third of Europeans would be unwilling to fight if their own country were attacked. My own country, Italy, was at the bottom of the pack, with a whopping 78% saying they would refuse.
These figures reveal several things at once. Worryingly, they show the growing strength of far-right and far-left forces [and anyone rational who doesn’t want a suicidal war with a superpower with the world’s largest nuclear arsenal] openly sympathetic to Russia and susceptible to its propaganda demonising Europe’s rearmament.

One way to toughen up populations is to put boots on the ground in Ukraine. For months, a European coalition of the willing has drawn up plans to deploy a “reassurance force” to Ukraine after a ceasefire. These discussions have not led anywhere because a truce is not in sight. Their aim was mainly political: to show European solidarity with Ukraine and encourage American engagement. I think it only makes any sense through a psychopathic imperialist lens of seeing the EU as a tool of US imperial power, rather than sovereign countries. Because then the EU can be viewed as another means of trying to grind down Russia by throwing bodies at it and the damage done to the people themselves only matters insofar as logistical limits, not valuing of human life. Like how the US imperialists don’t really care about the soldiers they send into forever wars, but they placate and tend to them, and throw in material benefits, just enough to keep a steady flow.

I also think the hysteria about Russia invading Europe is absurd, but this is not a good argument to use, because if and when Russia does take Kiev (which is not as unrealistic as some people think) you will then have undermined your own argument.
I don’t think the premise of my argument is that if Russia takes Kiev that the hysteria of Putin invading Europe would all of a sudden be justified.

They’re not just working on it, they’ve already done it. Videos are already appearing in Russian channels of captured Ukrainian soldiers claiming to have been deported from European countries and then immediately mobilized.

They might if more western Ukrainians were dying. Unfortunately a majority of the forcibly mobilized are native Russian speakers from Eastern Ukraine whom the nationalists from Western Ukraine consider Untermenschen.
Also, the Ukrainians just don’t often collect the bodies of their dead soldiers (which is why the exchanges of bodies with Russia are regularly so lopsided) and generally try to not acknowledge they are even dead for as long as possible in order to not have to pay out the families.

Also, in pretty much every video the Russians post of captured Ukrainian soldiers telling how they were forcibly mobilized, the Ukrainian soldiers are native Russian speakers, which means southern and eastern Ukraine.
(Kiev is also mostly Russian speaking, but for political stability they usually avoid forcibly mobilizing in Kiev too much. Also, Kiev is more wealthy and cosmopolitan, and the children of the elite don’t get mobilized – that’s why you often see videos from Kiev of parties and night clubs while in poorer, more rural regions men don’t even dare leave the house anymore.)
